This is about the original 1978 film Grease, starring John Travolta as Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy—not the later stage productions or television versions. A fully current update for every cast member is not established by the available reporting, but dated coverage offers context on several familiar faces and confirms the deaths of some performers.
Which Grease cast are we talking about?
Paramount identifies Grease as a 1978 film starring Travolta and Newton-John, alongside Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Didi Conn and Barry Pearl. The Academy’s 40th-anniversary listing also names Michael Tucci, Kelly Ward, Jamie Donnelly and Dinah Manoff among the principal cast. The story follows new girl Sandy and greaser Danny. Paramount’s film page and the Academy event listing identify the original feature.

Cast members reported deceased
Olivia Newton-John
Newton-John, who played Sandy, is among the cast members whose deaths are reported in The Independent’s 2024 retrospective. That report is a dated account, not a current career profile. The Independent’s retrospective also discusses other performers from the film.
Jeff Conaway
Conaway, who played Kenickie, is also reported dead in that 2024 retrospective. It covers his place in the cast and the later history of several colleagues, but does not serve as an exhaustive present-day directory.

Susan Buckner
Buckner played Patty Simcox. The Independent’s 2024 article was prompted in part by her death and reports that Newton-John and Conaway had also died. The article provides a point-in-time account rather than a complete status check of everyone in the ensemble.
What the available coverage says about other cast members
Didi Conn
Conn played Frenchy. TIME’s retrospective, published June 15, 2018, records that she reprised Frenchy in Grease 2 and appeared as a waitress in Grease: Live!. Those are historical franchise appearances; they do not establish what Conn is doing now. TIME’s 2018 retrospective provides that context.

The rest of the principal ensemble
The Academy’s cast list includes Stockard Channing, Barry Pearl, Michael Tucci, Kelly Ward, Jamie Donnelly and Dinah Manoff. The sources cited here establish their participation in the 1978 film, but do not provide verified current career updates for each of them. It would be misleading to turn the cast list into claims about their present activities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “where are they now?” needs a dated answer
Retrospectives are useful for tracing a film’s afterlife and recording developments reported at publication. They are not necessarily live biographies. The Independent’s article dates to 2024, and TIME’s account of Conn’s later appearances was published in 2018. Neither supports a claim that every cast member’s present status or work in October 2026 has been checked.

For the film’s identity and credited cast, Festival de Cannes’ film record also lists the production year as 1978 and names Travolta, Newton-John, Channing, Conaway, Pearl and Conn. Paramount’s promotional page uses the line “Grease is the one that you want!”—a studio tagline, not a cast member’s quote. Paramount
