Keiko Agena said she wished she and Alexis Bledel had become closer friends while making Gilmore Girls. “I wish we had more of a friendship,” Agena said, according to Entertainment Tonight. She added, “That was probably a lot to do with me not making as much of an effort as I should have.”
Why Agena held back
Agena said she believed Bledel and Graham worked very long hours and assumed their time off set was valuable. “They worked so many hours that their off-set time, I thought, was so precious to them and I didn’t want to insert myself into that time of their lives,” she said, as quoted by Entertainment Tonight.

That was Agena’s interpretation of the situation, not a reported explanation from Bledel or Graham. The accounts do not establish that either woman rejected Agena, or that the actors had a conflict.
Was there bad blood between the actors?
The reported comments do not point to bad blood. Agena spoke warmly about Bledel, describing her as “a wonderful person” and “an intelligent, special individual.” She also said she felt protective of Bledel as a fellow actor. Her regret was that they had not built a closer private friendship, not that their working relationship had gone badly.

The distinction matters because Lane and Rory’s close fictional friendship is not proof that the actors were equally close off screen. A positive professional relationship and an easy on-camera dynamic can exist without a close personal friendship.
What Bledel said about working with Agena
In production notes for the 2016 revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Bledel spoke positively about working with Agena: “It’s always fun working with Keiko; we worked together for so many years and established this dynamic that the two characters have that’s really easy. How the comments fit the show’s history
Gilmore Girls ran from 2000 to 2007, and Agena’s remarks came years after the original series ended. In a 2024 retrospective, Entertainment Tonight revisited Agena’s experience playing Lane and referred to her earlier comments about wishing she had been closer to Bledel. That later reflection on the pressures of working on the show should not be treated as a separate explanation for the actors’ private friendship.
The available accounts offer Agena’s perspective, not a full account from both actors. Within that limit, her explanation is straightforward: she wished she had made more effort, while trying not to intrude on time she believed Bledel and Graham needed away from work.
