The mix is memorable, but not always balanced: its performances and energy make the detours enjoyable, while the long runtime and emphasis on action weaken the story’s coherence.
What is Ghar Banduk Biryani about?
Directed by Hemant Jangal Awtade, this 2023 Marathi-language film brings three lives together in the fictional Kolagad area of Maharashtra. Pallam (Sayaji Shinde), leader of a rebel group, mourns his dead lover Maria and the biryani associated with his memories of her. His group kidnaps Raju (Akash Thosar), an accomplished cook, to prepare food for them. Raju, meanwhile, hopes to secure a home so he can marry Lakshmi. Raya (Nagraj Manjule), a principled police inspector transferred to Kolagad, enters their orbit as the strands converge.
That premise supplies the film’s odd, appealing hook: insurgency and police action sit alongside food, romance and comedy. The setup is enough to orient a viewer without giving away the later turns.
Does the genre mixture work?
Sometimes exuberantly, sometimes awkwardly. The film moves between black humor, choreographed action, romance and political commentary, and the sharp changes in register are part of its personality. They also make it feel overfull. A comic scene can give way to a serious one before either has fully developed, while the political framing competes with the film’s desire to deliver a heightened action spectacle.

Scroll.in called it a possible “world’s first singing-dancing Maoist comedy” and found that Awtade nearly pulls off the unusual combination. Its reservation was that satire, seriousness and romance do not always settle into a coherent whole. That is a useful description of the experience: the collision is often entertaining, but the film does not always make its ingredients feel as if they belong in the same dish.
How do the pacing and three leads compare?
The film’s balance shifts toward Raya. Raya’s action scenes give the movie much of its forward momentum, but the repeated confrontations can make him feel more central than the other two men. Pallam’s grief and the memories attached to Maria’s biryani offer a more unusual emotional and comic thread; Raju’s predicament connects the rebel group’s demand to the ordinary wish to build a life with Lakshmi. Those strands are compelling, yet the film gives less room to Pallam’s background than its premise suggests.

The runtime is also not listed consistently. The Central Board of Film Certification’s 2023 record gives the Marathi theatrical film a length of 161 minutes; Scroll.in also describes it as 161 minutes. ZEE5’s catalog lists 2h 33m, or 153 minutes. These are conflicting published listings, not a reconciled runtime. Either way, the story’s shifts and repeated action beats can make the film feel longer than its liveliest stretches warrant.
Are the performances and action worth the unevenness?
Yes, for viewers open to the film’s heightened style. Shinde gives Pallam both menace and sorrow, while Thosar makes Raju’s cooking and personal hopes an engaging counterpoint to the armed conflict. Manjule’s Raya anchors the action-forward side of the story. The ensemble helps the film hold together even when the writing pulls in several directions.

The craft gives the spectacle a strong surface. The Times of India’s Mihir Bhanage praised the performances—especially Shinde’s—as well as AV Prafullachandra’s music, Anmol Bhave’s sound design and Vikram Amladi’s cinematography. Bhanage’s main reservations were repeated slow-motion shots and Raya’s prominence at Pallam’s expense. That matches the film’s central trade-off: it has confidence and visual energy, but sometimes leans on familiar mass-action conventions instead of developing every character equally.
How did critics rate Ghar Banduk Biryani?
The published reviews differ in emphasis rather than pointing to a single consensus. Scroll.in, on 7 April 2023, found the genre experiment entertaining but overlong and tonally unstable. The Times of India’s Mihir Bhanage gave it 3.5/5 on 7 April, praising the acting and technical craft while noting the slow motion and imbalance around Raya. ABP Live Marathi’s Priyanka Kulkarni, in a review updated 14 April, gave it 4.5/5 and took a more enthusiastic view of the action and performances. These are individual critics’ judgments, not an aggregate rating.

Who should watch it?
Choose Ghar Banduk Biryani if you enjoy heightened Marathi action cinema and do not need a film to stay within one genre. Its three-lead premise, performances and bursts of irreverent humor provide plenty to enjoy. If you prefer tightly paced storytelling or a more even division of attention among characters, its extended action sequences and frequent tonal changes may frustrate you.
ZEE5 lists the film in its catalog, but availability, territorial rights, subtitles and language options can vary. Check the ZEE5 catalog for the intended viewing region rather than assuming it is currently available everywhere.
