The announcement also prohibited photography, video recording and livestreaming of the shrine’s ocean torii gates, buildings and structures. Contemporary reports said domestic and overseas sightseeing bus tours were refused. The restriction was reported in connection with the shrine’s location on the island that inspired Ghost of Tsushima—not as a ban on people who had played the game.
Which shrine in Tsushima banned tourists?
The shrine is Watatsumi Shrine, also written as Watazumi or Watadumi in English-language coverage. It is on Tsushima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, not Tsushima Shrine in Aichi Prefecture. Nagasaki Prefecture’s tourism association lists Watadumi Shrine among real Tsushima destinations and describes its five torii gates, two of them offshore: Nagasaki Prefecture tourism information.

The shrine’s name appears alongside Ghost of Tsushima because the game was inspired by the island. That connection makes the place a point of interest for some players, but the available reporting does not establish that the game caused the conduct cited by the shrine or the access restriction.
What did the March 2025 announcement say?
AJMEDIA reported that the shrine’s announcement was dated March 23, 2025, and stated that entry was forbidden to anyone who was not a parishioner or worshipper. It also prohibited photography, video filming and livestreaming of the ocean torii gates, buildings and structures. GameBusiness.jp separately reported the restriction on tourist-purpose visits and linked to the shrine’s Instagram announcement: AJMEDIA’s report and GameBusiness.jp’s report.

The reporting says the restriction applied to Japanese and foreign tourists, including sightseeing bus tours. It does not establish an application process or criteria by which a tourist could qualify as a worshipper, so visitors should not assume that respectful conduct alone grants access. Nor does the report specify a boundary-based exception for taking photographs from outside the grounds.
Why did the shrine restrict access?
According to contemporaneous reporting, the shrine referred to a serious incident the previous afternoon, March 22, 2025, and said it had repeatedly consulted Tsushima city hall, a tourism organization and Nagasaki Prefectural Police without resolving its problems. These are statements attributed to the shrine, not independent findings about individual incidents.

Earlier coverage described complaints including smoking, littering, spitting, mountain-bike riding in a restricted area and theft of omamori, or protective amulets. AJMEDIA also recounted a 2024 announcement targeting Korean visitors after a confrontation. A May 2025 digest added reports of illegal parking, littering, defecation on the grounds, stone-throwing and abuse of priests. These allegations should not be treated as proof that every visitor—or any nationality or group as a whole—behaved improperly. The digest characterized most foreign tourists as observing proper etiquette, but supplied no measured statistic.
Can you still visit Watatsumi Shrine?
The sources establish what the shrine announced in March 2025, not whether the rule remains in force or how it is currently enforced. Check with current official or local tourism channels before planning a visit. Do not rely on older travel listings or assume that a sightseeing stop is permitted.

For general context—not as a substitute for the shrine’s own rules—the Japan National Tourism Organization explains, “A torii gate is the boundary line between holy ground and the secular world,” and recommends bowing before entering and behaving calmly and respectfully at religious sites: JNTO’s visitor guide.
How did the shrine become linked to the game’s players?
The connection between the shrine and players was not only about tourism. Typhoon No. 10 damaged an offshore torii in September 2020. A crowdfunding appeal for restoration raised about 27 million yen against a 5 million yen target by its January 2021 close. Nagasaki Shimbun reported that many donations came from players of the PS4 game Ghost of Tsushima: Nagasaki Shimbun’s report. That fundraising history does not establish a cause for the later restriction.
