Its shifts are most persuasive when they serve the record’s central idea: showing a less polished, less filtered version of life. The album’s cinematic sequencing gives that variety a direction, though its breadth can make the journey feel uneven.
What does JPEG RAW sound like?
Released by Warner Records on March 22, 2024, JPEG RAW starts from Clark’s blues-rooted guitar and stretches into markedly different rhythmic and production settings. The label describes a palette spanning blues, rock, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, and African and world music influences. That list is a useful map of the album’s reach, not a guarantee that every turn lands with equal force.

The title track is a clear example of the collision: Blues Rock Review characterized it as hip-hop with blues guitar. Rather than treating guitar as the whole arrangement, the track places it alongside a beat-driven approach. Elsewhere, the album changes its musical frame, so listeners looking for a conventional blues-rock set should expect substantial variation.
Clark told GRAMMY.com that the band began with a free-flowing jam session during lockdown and explored without a fixed path. He also connected his songwriting direction to travel and hearing Songhoy Blues. That background helps explain the openness of the arrangements; the test is whether the changes make emotional sense as the record unfolds.

- Big Bad Blues, as the title suggests, focuses on Gibbons' lifelong love of the blues and rock & roll, showcasing the blues-influenced vocals and guitar licks that have together served as the foundation for his numerous hits over the past five decades
Does the variety cohere?
Clark’s stated concept supplies a thread, but it does not erase the contrasts. Some passages foreground guitar and blues phrasing; others lean on groove, programmed-feeling beats, or a more expansive ensemble sound. The album’s character comes from the friction between those modes, not from smoothing them into one uniform style.
That makes the record more compelling as a sequence than as a checklist of influences. Its shifts can feel like changes of scene in a film, while individual tracks retain distinct identities. The trade-off is that breadth sometimes outruns cohesion: a listener may welcome the ambition without feeling that every stylistic detour deepens the same idea.

What does the title mean?
Clark has described JPEG RAW as an answer to a culture of phone screens, social media, edits, and filters. In his official biography, he says, “JPEG RAW is about showing the real and not the edit.” The title invokes the contrast between a processed image and one presented closer to its unedited source. It is an artistic intention rather than a literal promise that the music is untouched or documentary.
The idea gives the album’s range a personal context: it can move between sounds without presenting one carefully controlled image of Clark. Yet the concept works best as a lens for hearing the record, not as proof that every song achieves the same degree of candor.

How do the guests fit the album?
The credited appearances bring distinct voices into a record already built around stylistic movement. Stevie Wonder appears on “What About the Children,” George Clinton on “Funk Witch U,” Naala on “This Is Who We Are,” and Keyon Harrold on “Alone Together.” These are not interchangeable guest spots: they expand the album’s vocal and instrumental palette while reinforcing its willingness to move beyond a single blues framework.
Warner Records also notes samples of Thelonious Monk and Sonny Boy Williamson. The named influences and appearances suit the album’s broad musical conversation, but the guest list alone does not establish how well each collaboration works; that depends on how the listener responds to the individual tracks and their place in the sequence.

Why does the sequencing matter?
Clark’s official biography says he wanted the record to play like a film. He describes its movement as beginning in angst and confusion, passing through introspection, and heading toward hope and triumph. Looking back on the finished order, he said, “When the album sequencing was finished, the band and I realized that we’d made an album into a movie.”
That framing encourages a full-album listen rather than treating the stylistic changes as isolated experiments. The sequence proposes an emotional arc; whether it feels earned will depend on how persuasively the contrasting tracks carry the listener from tension toward release. Clark’s explanation clarifies the intended journey without dictating a single response to it.

Who is JPEG RAW for?
- Try it if you enjoy blues guitar placed in changing musical contexts, genre-crossing arrangements, and albums designed to move through a sequence of moods.
- Approach with expectations in check if you want an uninterrupted traditional blues-rock record or need every stylistic shift to resolve into one consistent sound.
JPEG RAW is at its strongest as an ambitious, personal album whose breadth has a stated emotional direction. Its variety is both its appeal and its risk: the record invites listeners to follow Clark across genres, even when the connections feel less seamless than the ambition behind them.
