The October remark linking Gary Lineker, Leicester City and Tottenham cannot be verified from the available reporting. No original post or reliable contemporaneous account establishes what he said, when he said it, or whom it targeted. What is documented is the background: Lineker played for both clubs, and Leicester’s 2015–16 title campaign put his loyalties in the spotlight.
What did Gary Lineker say about Leicester City and Tottenham?
No verbatim October comment is established in the available sources. They do not identify a post, its date or platform, or a confirmed target. Without the original post or reliable contemporaneous reporting, the claim that Lineker “gloated” should not be treated as verified.
Why are Leicester and Tottenham linked to Lineker?
Lineker began his playing career at Leicester City in 1978 and remained a supporter, according to The Guardian’s 2024 retrospective. He also played for Tottenham Hotspur; The Independent reported in May 2016 on his connection to both clubs.
What happened during Leicester’s 2015–16 title race?
Before Chelsea played Tottenham in May 2016, Leicester had already secured the title while Tottenham still had a mathematical chance. The Independent described Lineker’s desire for Leicester to win despite his Spurs connection as feeling “unfaithful” to Tottenham while watching Chelsea play. That wording is the publication’s characterization, not a direct Lineker quotation.

Lineker had also promised to present Match of the Day wearing only his pants if Leicester won the league. Leicester became champions in May 2016, and Lineker later fulfilled the promise. The Premier League’s 2025 retrospective lists him among former Leicester, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham and England players and recounts the title moment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does that history confirm an October gloat?
No. The 2015–16 rivalry context and Lineker’s ties to both clubs explain why a later Leicester–Tottenham remark might attract attention, but they do not establish that an October gloat occurred or what it meant. The documented title story should be kept separate from the unverified claim.
