Gary Busey has said that he died after surgery for injuries from a 1988 motorcycle crash, experienced a spiritual realm, and came back. That is his retrospective account—not a death confirmed by contemporaneous medical reporting. News reports from the time document a critical head injury, brain surgery and early improvement.

What happened to Gary Busey in 1988?

Contemporary reports describe a serious motorcycle crash in Culver City. United Press International reported on December 6, 1988, that Busey’s unprotected head struck a curb, that he underwent brain surgery, and that his condition had improved from critical to serious. A medical source quoted by UPI cautioned that, as with any head injury, doctors would not know for sure for 24 to 48 hours. UPI’s December 6 report does not identify that source by name.

The Los Angeles Times reported the day before that Busey was in improved condition after surgery. It said doctors believed at that point that he had not suffered brain damage, while a spokesman for the doctors described the outlook as potentially quite good if his improvement continued. That was an assessment during the early recovery, not a comprehensive account of later effects. The December 5, 1988, report records what was known then.

Did Gary Busey really die after the crash?

Busey has said that he died after brain surgery, but the contemporaneous reports cited here do not establish that he was declared dead. They report surgery and changes in his condition; they do not document a death during the operation. The careful distinction is that Busey described his experience as having died and returned, while available news coverage documents a life-threatening injury and recovery.

In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Busey recalled that he went off a Harley-Davidson without a helmet, struck his head, split his skull, “passed away after brain surgery,” and went to what he called “the other side” before coming back. The interviewer identifies the crash as occurring in 1988 and says Busey spent months learning to walk and talk again. Read Simon Hattenstone’s interview.

What did Busey say he experienced?

Busey has characterized the event as an out-of-body and spiritual experience. In a 2016 Los Angeles Times conversation, he said he went “to the other side,” received information from angels, and heard them speak. Those are Busey’s descriptions and interpretation, not independently verified observations. The 2016 interview includes his account in the context of a discussion about his stage work.

In a 2018 Parade interview, Busey gave a more detailed version and named December 4, 1988, as the crash date. That date is part of his account in that interview. The article also discusses his book, Buseyisms: Gary Busey’s Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, which offers readers a longer version of his reflections. It is a source for Busey’s own perspective, not independent medical confirmation. Read the Parade interview.

How to understand the different accounts

The records answer different questions. December 1988 news reports describe the crash, surgery and Busey’s early condition. Later interviews document what Busey says he experienced and how he interpreted it. The early reports do not verify a spiritual realm, and Busey’s later recollections do not establish a medical finding that he died during surgery.

Nor does the early report that doctors believed he had not suffered brain damage settle every question about his later health. It was a time-specific statement during his initial recovery. The Guardian’s account of months spent relearning to walk and talk supplies further recovery context, without turning the experience into either a medically verified near-death event or a simple story of an effortless recovery.
