What Brooks says the demand letters contained
In a complaint filed September 13, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, Brooks alleged that a July 17 letter accused him of sexual misconduct and threatened to make a draft complaint public unless he paid millions of dollars. He alleged that an August 23 follow-up offered not to file in exchange for a multimillion-dollar payment. The complaint does not establish that the letters amounted to extortion.

Brooks’s filing sought declaratory relief, damages and an injunction. In a statement quoted by the Associated Press, he said: “For the last two months, I have been hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales of what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions of dollars.” That is Brooks’s characterization of events, not a judicial finding. What the former stylist alleges—and Brooks’s response
On October 3, 2024, a former hair-and-makeup stylist filed a complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court under the pseudonym Jane Roe. She alleges that Brooks sexually assaulted her, including raping her during a 2019 trip, and describes other unwanted sexual conduct. Brooks denies the allegations. The plaintiff’s counsel, Wigdor LLP, characterized Brooks’s earlier Mississippi filing as an effort to silence and intimidate their client. The firm said it was “confident that Brooks will be held accountable for his actions” and called the pre-emptive filing “an act of desperation and attempted intimidation.” That is counsel’s position, just as extortion is Brooks’s allegation. A status summary checked October 7, 2026, reports that the California action was moved to federal court and stayed pending the Mississippi case. It also reports that a Mississippi judge denied the plaintiff’s request to proceed anonymously in September 2025, after which she appealed. The summary reports no appellate decision, trial date, settlement or ruling on the underlying allegations.
