In a remark attributed to a 1993 interview with Brad Lemack, Gary Coleman said he would have left Hollywood if he had known what his life would become. He added that he wanted “a normal life, and have friends.” Coleman was 25. The line resurfaced in 2024 through coverage of the documentary Gary, but it was not a new interview.
What Gary Coleman said in the 1993 interview
Yahoo’s 2024 report quotes Coleman as saying: “If someone had told me my life would be like this, early enough where I could have gotten out, I would have gotten out. I would have had a normal life, and have friends.” The remark is attributed to an interview with Brad Lemack when Coleman was 25.

Us Weekly’s coverage of Gary quotes a shorter version from footage in the documentary: “If someone had told me that my life would be like this early enough where I could have gotten out, I would have gotten out.” The published versions differ in wording and length; without the full recording, they should be treated as reported quotations rather than a single independently verified transcript.
Why he was looking back on Hollywood
Coleman became famous as Arnold Jackson on Diff’rent Strokes, which ran for eight seasons and ended in 1986. The Associated Press later reported that Coleman spoke bitterly about his early Hollywood experience and eventually worked as a security guard when he needed money. The contrast between childhood fame and the difficulties he described afterward gives the 1993 remark its weight: it is a reflection on the life around stardom, not simply on being recognized.
#1 Best Overall
Health was part of that context. A 1990 Los Angeles Times feature described Coleman’s congenital kidney problems and dialysis. It also recounted disputes over family, management and money, while preserving competing accounts from people involved. Those conflicts are reported recollections and allegations, not settled explanations for Coleman’s later life.
How the documentary Gary revisits the remark
The 2024 documentary Gary draws on archival material and testimony from friends and colleagues to revisit Coleman’s career, health, mental health, and life after the series. It also considers the burden of being persistently identified with Arnold and the catchphrase associated with the character. Peacock was reported as the documentary’s release platform in 2024; its current availability is not established here.

A separate comment from 2001
Coleman made a different, stark observation in a 2001 Associated Press interview: “I would not give my first 15 years to my worst enemy, and I don’t even have a worst enemy.” That is not the source of the 1993 “would have gotten out” remark. Read separately, the two statements show how he described his early years at different points, without making them interchangeable quotations.
