Ruchi Ghanashyam’s An Indian Woman in Islamabad: 1997–2000 offers a personal account of diplomatic life in Pakistan during a turbulent period in India–Pakistan relations. Penguin Random House India describes her as the first Indian woman diplomat stationed in Islamabad; the memoir brings that professional experience together with family life, gender dynamics, surveillance and events including the nuclear tests and Kargil conflict.
What the Scroll.in excerpt is about
Scroll.in published an excerpt from the memoir on September 6, 2024. Its Karachi passages begin with a search for “Karachi halwa” before widening into the city’s politics, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), migration and Karachi’s place in Pakistan. These scenes offer one window into the book, not a summary of the whole memoir. Read the Scroll.in excerpt.
Who was Ruchi Ghanashyam in Islamabad?
Ghanashyam served in Islamabad from 1997 to 2000. Penguin Random House India describes her as the first Indian woman diplomat stationed there. That distinction is the publisher’s description, rather than an independently verified roster claim. The book recounts her experience as one diplomat’s perspective; it should not be treated as a definitive account of every Indian diplomatic posting or Pakistani society as a whole. Diplomatic work, family life and a tense period
The memoir connects professional duties with the adjustments of life abroad. In a Hindustan Times interview, Ghanashyam described choosing the challenging posting and discussed how her family adapted, as well as the mission staff accompanying them. The account also includes her encounters with Pakistani officials. Hindustan Times interview and excerpt.

The publisher presents the book against the backdrop of the India–Pakistan nuclear tests and Kargil conflict. Other coverage describes additional events coinciding with the posting: the 1998 tests, Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Lahore visit, the Kargil War, the Musharraf coup and the IC 814 hijacking. These are descriptions of the book’s context and reported recollections, not a substitute for independently sourced histories of those events. India’s World book listing.
Surveillance and gender in the memoir
Coverage of the book highlights surveillance and being followed as recurring elements in Ghanashyam’s recollections of her time in Pakistan. The theme matters alongside the memoir’s account of a diplomat’s public role: it conveys how security pressures could reach into ordinary movement and family life. The Indian Express also reports that her husband, A.R. Ghanashyam, was sent to Kandahar during the IC 814 crisis; Scroll published a separate excerpt from his chapter about the hijacking. These are reported accounts within the book’s narrative, rather than independently established findings about every diplomatic household. The Indian Express coverage; Scroll.in excerpt from A.R. Ghanashyam’s chapter.

Read in context, this is a personal response to particular encounters—not a general claim about women’s experiences in either country.

How to read the memoir
The book is most useful as a first-person account of diplomatic work and domestic life during a consequential posting. For historical analysis, pair its recollections with independently sourced timelines and documentary accounts. The Scroll excerpt’s focus on Karachi adds a city-level perspective, but neither that excerpt nor one diplomat’s memoir can stand in for the full complexity of Pakistan or India–Pakistan relations.
