Michael J. Fox became a television star as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties, a film icon as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and a prominent Parkinson’s research advocate after publicly disclosing his diagnosis in 1998. Those chapters unfolded alongside one another: he continued acting after founding his foundation, while writing and documentary projects gave him further ways to tell his story.
From Canadian beginnings to a television breakthrough
Early work in Canada
Born in Alberta, Fox began acting as a teenager. He worked in television and theater in Vancouver before moving to Los Angeles at 17, according to The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s biography.

Becoming Alex P. Keaton
Fox’s breakthrough came with Family Ties, where his portrayal of Alex P. Keaton made him an internationally known television actor. The Television Academy records three consecutive lead actor comedy Emmy wins for the role, in 1987, 1988, and 1989. The character’s sharp-edged, conservative outlook made for a memorable contrast with his liberal parents, played by Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross.
Film stardom and the role of Marty McFly
In 1985, Fox played Marty McFly in Robert Zemeckis’s Back to the Future. The film became his signature movie role, and he reprised it in the two sequels. The Associated Press revisited the film’s legacy on its 40th anniversary in 2025. The Television Academy also lists Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, Casualties of War, Doc Hollywood, and The American President among his notable films.

The combination of the sitcom and film success made Fox unusual: he was a leading television actor while also becoming the face of a major movie franchise. Marty McFly remains the role most closely associated with his film career, but it was one part of a wider run across comedy and drama.
Parkinson’s diagnosis and the start of public advocacy
Diagnosis in 1991, disclosure in 1998
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, at age 29. He kept the diagnosis private for several years and disclosed it publicly in 1998, according to the Foundation’s biography. The distinction matters: his diagnosis preceded his public advocacy by years.

Founding the Foundation
In 2000, Fox founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Its mission is to advance research toward a cure and better therapies for people living with Parkinson’s disease. The Foundation says it has helped direct more than $3 billion in Parkinson’s research funding; that is the organization’s current reported total, not a separately specified or dated accounting figure.
Fox has described the work as a collective effort: “When the cure is found — and it will be — it won’t be because of any single individual or because of our Foundation,” he says. “It will be because of all of us, working together.” He has also advocated publicly, including by testifying before Congress.

Spin City and a shift in priorities
Fox played Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty on Spin City, earning the lead actor comedy Emmy in 2000. After one more season, he stepped away from full-time acting to focus on advocacy. That shift did not mean he stopped performing altogether.
Later roles and a return to full-time acting
Fox appeared in guest roles including Dwight on Rescue Me, for which he won a guest actor Emmy in 2009, and Lewis Canning on The Good Wife. His television credits also include Boston Legal and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2013, he returned to full-time acting with The Michael J. Fox Show. The Television Academy’s 2026 record includes a nomination for his guest role on Shrinking, bringing his total to 19 Emmy nominations and five wins.

Books and documentary perspectives
Fox’s books
Fox has written about his life, work, and experience with Parkinson’s in books including Lucky Man, Always Looking Up, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future, No Time Like the Future, and Future Boy. The Library of Congress and Television Academy list his books; Future Boy returns specifically to his experience making Back to the Future.
Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie
Davis Guggenheim’s documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie was released by Apple TV+ in 2023. It combines a portrait of Fox’s life and career with his experience of Parkinson’s. The Television Academy records seven Emmy nominations and four wins for the film. Its documentary form offers a different perspective from Fox’s books: it brings his story to the screen through filmmaking and archival material rather than relying only on his written account.

A career shaped by performance and advocacy
Fox’s story is not a simple move from movie star to retired activist. His acting brought him prominence; his 1998 disclosure made his experience with Parkinson’s public; and the foundation he established in 2000 gave his advocacy a sustained institutional focus. He continued to act, write, and participate in documentary storytelling while that work developed. The Television Academy’s record also lists a 2026 Lasker~Bloomberg Public Service Award and Bob Hope Humanitarian Award among his recent honors, alongside the Foundation’s report of his 2025 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
