A Scroll headline called the fictional character “the most popular superhero” at the convention, held October 22–23, but the report provides no survey or ranking method to substantiate that comparison.
What happened at Mumbai Comic Con?
Scroll published its report on October 27, 2016, after the October 22–23 convention. It identified artist Dan Goldman, co-creator of Priya’s Shakti, as a Comic Con highlight and reported that he attended with collaborators to launch Priya’s Mirror. The team included New York-based documentary filmmaker Ram Devineni and Mumbai filmmaker and writer Paromita Vohra. The Mahendra Singh Foundation also announced the planned Mumbai launch for those dates.
Scroll’s headline described Priya as the event’s most popular superhero. That wording belongs to the article’s characterization: the available accounts do not explain how popularity was measured or provide a comparative ranking of characters.
Who is Priya in Priya’s Shakti?
Priya is a fictional fruit seller from a small Indian village. In the first graphic novel, she survives gang rape and faces rejection and victim-blaming. She seeks help from Parvati, the Hindu goddess, and receives a tiger companion named Shakti. Rather than return to take revenge, Priya carries a message of peace, love and equality to her village.

Scroll reported that the story drew on real incidents and interviews with rape survivors and was created with Indian NGO partners. Priya herself is a fictional character; the connection to real experiences comes through the story’s sources and development, not through evidence that Priya was a documented person.
What is Priya’s Mirror about?
The sequel shifts its focus to acid attacks and their survivors. Scroll said the creators’ conversations with survivors in Delhi helped shape the book. Priya and the survivors confront Ahankar, a demon king, as the story explores what lies behind his transformation into a demon.

Vohra put the approach this way: “You cannot fight Ahankar unless you find out what made him a demon.” The creators also aimed to show survivors as people beyond a victim role rather than offer an easy resolution. Goldman described the challenge of depicting scars without sensationalizing them: “I didn’t want to be gratuitous. I didn’t want to portray them as monsters, but we still needed to show these attacks, to have the reader feel what the emotions were, there’s a balance between being exploitative and being accurate enough and I hope I was able to do that.”
