What was in the Dunkin’ ad?
Dunkin’ announced its “King of Summer” campaign on July 29, 2025, with actor Gavin Casalegno, known for The Summer I Turned Pretty. The promotion featured the Golden Hour Refresher, which Dunkin’ described as Mango Pineapple and Strawberry Dragonfruit flavors mixed with lemonade. The company framed Casalegno’s “golden glow” and sunny persona as a fit for the drink and summer theme. Dunkin’s campaign announcement includes his description of the drink as capturing the feel of a summer sunset.
The phrase that became the focus was brief: “This tan? Genetics.” Her Campus described it as part of Casalegno’s playful claim to the “King of Summer” title. Her Campus’ explainer quoted the line from the ad.
Why did the line provoke criticism?
The ad appeared days after American Eagle’s Sydney Sweeney campaign drew scrutiny over its “great jeans”/“genes” wordplay and emphasis on her appearance. Media coverage reported that some viewers connected the campaigns because both used genetics language in close succession. Critics said the wording risked echoing racialized beauty ideals or associations with eugenics. These were critical interpretations of the line and its context, not proof of Dunkin’s intent.

The timing gave a light, isolated joke a broader context for some viewers: rather than hearing only a boast about a tan in a summer-themed ad, they heard another genetics reference arriving amid an argument about beauty, genes and advertising. The Boston Globe reported one commenter asking, “Why are ads so obsessed with genetics all of a sudden?” That is an example of a reported reaction, not polling or evidence of public consensus. The Boston Globe’s August 1 report covered the timing and reactions; Adweek’s coverage also placed the backlash in the context of the American Eagle campaign.
How did people interpret the ad?
Coverage recorded competing responses. Some viewers criticized the genetics reference or pledged to boycott; others treated it as a throwaway joke supporting the character’s summer persona and the drink’s “golden” branding.
