Alia Bhatt is the gravitational center of Gangubai Kathiawadi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2022 Hindi drama about a young woman sold into a brothel who rises to power in Kamathipura. Her commanding performance and Bhansali’s lavish visual design make the film compelling to watch; its focus on a single heroine, however, leaves less room for the other women whose lives shape its world.
What is Gangubai Kathiawadi about?
The film follows Gangubai after a lover who promised her a film career dupes and sells her to a brothel. Set in 1950s and 1960s Kamathipura, it traces her ascent from a vulnerable newcomer to a powerful madam and public advocate. Along the way, she challenges brothel madam Sheela, forms a bond with underworld figure Rahim Lala, falls for tailor Afshan, and competes with Raziabai for influence.
Netflix describes it as a drama about a young woman who reclaims power through underworld connections. The streaming service’s India title page lists Alia Bhatt, Vijay Raaz and Seema Pahwa among the stars, with Ajay Devgn, Jim Sarbh, Chhaya Kadam, Shantanu Maheshwari and Indira Tiwari also in the cast. Netflix lists Hindi as the original language and Telugu audio, along with English and Hindi subtitles. Check Netflix’s local title listing for current availability; its India page has shown a regional availability notice, and catalogs can change.
Does Alia Bhatt carry the film?
Yes—and the film’s strengths and limitations both follow from how thoroughly it centers her. Bhatt moves between Gangubai’s defiance, vulnerability and showmanship with a force that gives the character a distinct presence. In Scroll, Nandini Ramnath calls her “mesmerising from word go,” praising both her command of emphatic dialogue and her expressive silences. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express likewise finds that Bhatt makes Gangubai feel real and conveys the women’s pain and camaraderie.

That centrality also narrows the perspective. Gangubai’s journey is the story the film chooses to tell, but other sex workers’ experiences often remain at its edges. Ramnath argues that the heroine’s prominence can eclipse both the supporting performers and the complexity of the women around her. The result is an ambitious portrait of one woman’s rise, not a broad account of life in Kamathipura.
How do the visuals and supporting cast hold up?
Bhansali gives the film an elaborate, carefully composed visual world. Ramnath praises its cinematography and detailed production design, while Gupta describes an extravagantly constructed universe and striking sequences. The stylization lends the saga scale and makes its central figure look at home in a heightened, almost theatrical landscape.

But polish does not always translate into dramatic depth. Both critics identify passages that feel staged: Gupta finds some speeches overly crowd-pleasing, and Ramnath sees technical finish and star showcase taking precedence over complexity. The film’s larger gestures can be stirring, though at times they announce an emotion rather than letting it develop naturally.
The ensemble offers welcome counterweights. Ramnath singles out Indira Tiwari as Kamli and appreciates the courtship scenes between Gangubai and Afshan. Gupta praises Tiwari, Vijay Raaz, Shantanu Maheshwari and Seema Pahwa, while wishing that some roles had more room. Raziabai, in particular, is one of the figures Ramnath feels suffers from the film’s fixation on Gangubai.

What does the film say about sex work and agency?
Gangubai Kathiawadi presents its heroine as someone who claims authority in a world that has exploited her, and the story champions sex workers’ agency. Yet that purpose sits uneasily alongside its romanticized spectacle. Ramnath notes that the film does not bring real-world sex-worker activists into its account and gives limited attention to characters whose paths might parallel Gangubai’s. Wendy Ide, reviewing for The Guardian, also cautions that the film may romanticize its central character, whom she describes as a sex worker turned madam, advocate and campaigner.
These are critical readings of the film’s choices, not a universal verdict on how viewers or sex workers will respond. They point to a useful distinction: a story can celebrate one woman’s power while still leaving broader questions about the people and systems around her largely unexplored.

Is the story a true account of Gangubai’s life?
The film is inspired by “The Matriarch of Kamathipura,” a chapter in S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges’s anthology Mafia Queens of Mumbai. It should be approached as a dramatization, not a verified biography. Ramnath warns that the book’s profile mixes fact and apocrypha; Ide also describes the film as loosely based on a real-life woman. The film’s scenes and characterization should not be taken as independently confirmed history.
For readers interested in the source material, Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Zaidi and Borges provides the chapter from which the film draws, but it is not a guarantee that every account is established fact.

Verdict: a magnetic lead in a narrowed saga
As a star-led drama, Gangubai Kathiawadi has a compelling center: Bhatt gives Gangubai conviction and emotional presence, and Bhansali surrounds her with vivid visual craft. The trade-off is a heroine-first perspective that limits the supporting women’s stories and sometimes lets spectacle and sentiment outrun complexity. It is most rewarding when Bhatt’s performance makes the character feel immediate, rather than when the film asks grandeur alone to do the dramatic work.
What was its Netflix reception?
Netflix reported on May 5, 2022, that the film reached the top of its global non-English film ranking within a week of its April 26 premiere. The company said it recorded 13.81 million viewing hours that week, appeared in the Top 10 in 25 countries, and ranked number one in nine. These are Netflix’s figures for that dated reporting period, not a measure of current viewership. Netflix India Vice President of Content Monika Shergill called it a “masterpiece” that had “found tremendous love from Netflix viewers in India and worldwide”; that wording is the company’s promotional characterization.
