The outlet returned in March 2025 after Gunzilla Games secured the rights to the brand; its official site now lists print and digital subscriptions. The shutdown was real, but it was not the end of Game Informer.
What happened to Game Informer?
GameStop announced the closure on August 2, 2024, and Game Informer staff were laid off, according to GameSpot’s contemporaneous report. The farewell announcement began, “After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming,” and said the publication was closing.
The announcement followed a long publishing history, but the sources cited here do not establish a specific financial or audience-related reason for GameStop’s decision. The 33 years refers to the publication’s run, not a circulation or readership figure.
What was the last Game Informer issue?
Issue 367, published in June 2024, was the last issue to appear before the shutdown. Its cover featured Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as reported by GameSpot.

Is Game Informer still shut down?
No. In a March 2025 letter, editor-in-chief Matt Miller announced that Gunzilla Games had secured the rights to Game Informer, the previous team had returned, and the outlet was operating under Game Informer Inc. The letter also said the site’s archive and daily coverage were restored. Miller wrote, “The whole team has returned, and we can’t wait to connect with you again.” Read the official relaunch letter.
Miller said the new owners supported keeping Game Informer an independent editorial outlet, with its editorial group deciding what to cover and how. That is the editor-in-chief’s account of the owners’ position, rather than independent verification of editorial practice.
