La controversia entre Gala Montes y Bárbara de Regil comenzó en noviembre de 2021, después de que De Regil publicara sobre la muerte de su perrita. Según Univision, Montes escribió en una publicación de De Regil: «Ahora compra otro». De Regil contestó: «Un perrito no es un mueble que cambias así como así».
El comentario breve dio paso a críticas más amplias de Montes en redes. La cobertura de Unicable describe que Montes cuestionó que De Regil se hubiera ausentado mientras trabajaba en Los Ángeles y objetó cómo había presentado la muerte de su mascota.

En declaraciones recogidas por Univision, De Regil sostuvo que la perrita se había quedado con su madre mientras ella trabajaba en Los Ángeles. También dijo que el animal ingirió una bolsa de veneno que había quedado suelta en el jardín después de trabajos de control de plagas. Esas son las circunstancias según la versión de De Regil, no hechos confirmados de manera independiente por los reportes.

De Regil dijo además que no consideraba que hubiera existido una pelea entre ambas. Univision la citó diciendo: «Yo no me peleé con ella, yo ni la fumé, ella se peleó solita».

Montes negó que buscara fama o que intentara aprovechar la popularidad de De Regil. En una declaración citada por Univision, dijo: «Yo no estoy buscando hacerme famosa, creo que la fama es un arma y si no se sabe utilizar pasan ese tipo de cosas. Si quisiera colgarme de alguien no lo haría de Bárbara de Regil». Según ese reporte, explicó que su objeción tenía que ver con las publicaciones y con lo que ella consideraba maltrato animal.

Qué se sabe y qué no quedó establecido
La cobertura documenta un intercambio público: Montes criticó a De Regil; De Regil respondió que la perrita estaba con su familia y negó la caracterización de Montes. Los artículos citados no presentan una investigación independiente que confirme abandono o negligencia, ni establecen por su cuenta las circunstancias completas de la muerte.
Hay también una inconsistencia en el nombre de la mascota: una nota de Univision la llama «Nara» y «Nala». Por eso, es más preciso referirse a ella como la perrita de De Regil. Las Estrellas publicó una nota sobre la explicación de Montes el 26 de noviembre de 2021 y la actualizó el 11 de marzo de 2024: Gala Montes explica por qué cuestionó a Bárbara de Regil en redes sociales.
