The role turned years of theater and television work into a breakthrough, and Pascal says it opened the way to Narcos, The Mandalorian and The Last of Us.
What Pedro Pascal did before Game of Thrones
Pascal was already a working actor long before audiences knew him as Oberyn Martell. His early career included theater and guest roles in episodic television: a substantial résumé, but not yet the broad visibility that comes with a breakout television role.

His stage work included productions such as Maple and Vine, Beauty of the Father, Based on a Totally True Story, Some Men, Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing. He was also a member of the LAByrinth Theater Company and worked as a director. Pascal later summed up the contrast between those years and what followed by describing his earlier résumé as “unknown theater credits and episodic television.” Vanity Fair’s 2024 interview records that retrospective account; Broadway.com’s profile documents his stage background.
Was Game of Thrones Pedro Pascal’s breakout role?
Yes. In season four of HBO’s Game of Thrones, which aired in 2014, Pascal played Oberyn Martell, the charismatic prince from Dorne known as the Red Viper. The part brought his performance to a far wider audience and is commonly identified as his breakout role.
#1 Best Overall
Pascal has been direct about the importance of the job. Asked which role had meant most to him emotionally or creatively, he told Vanity Fair: “The role that changed my life was in Game of Thrones.” He added: “Without Thrones, I would not have had Narcos, The Mandalorian, or The Last of Us.” That is Pascal’s own account of the turning point—not a claim that one part alone explains every later opportunity. Biography.com’s career overview also identifies Oberyn as his breakout role.
How Game of Thrones led to Narcos
In 2015, the year after his Game of Thrones appearance, Pascal took the role of DEA agent Javier Peña in Netflix’s Narcos. The crime drama followed the hunt for Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. Pascal became one of the series’ central actors and narrated it; the show ran for three seasons through 2017, according to Biography.com and BroadwayWorld’s career listing.

The sequence matters: Pascal did not begin his career with Narcos, nor did he move straight from obscurity to a long-established film-star status. Game of Thrones raised his profile; Narcos gave him a prominent role in another internationally watched series and helped sustain that attention.
How The Mandalorian and The Last of Us expanded his profile
The Mandalorian
In 2019, Pascal began starring as Din Djarin, the armored bounty hunter at the center of The Mandalorian. The role extended his reach into the Star Wars universe. In a 2023 interview with StarWars.com, Pascal recalled the audience response at Star Wars Celebration in 2019 as surreal. He also spoke about the shared physical work behind the character, including contributions from stunt performer Lateef Crowder and physical performer Brendan Wayne. Pascal described Din’s bond with Grogu simply: “What his heart needs is Grogu.”

The Last of Us
In 2023, Pascal starred as Joel Miller in HBO’s adaptation of the video game The Last of Us. The performance earned him a 2023 Primetime Emmy nomination, as reported by Biography.com. The series put him at the center of another major adaptation, this time in a dramatic role shaped by Joel’s relationship with Ellie.

Pascal’s career continued across television and film rather than following a single franchise path. Later credits listed by Biography.com include Gladiator II and The Wild Robot in 2024, followed by Materialists, Eddington and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025. Those projects show the breadth of work that followed his television rise; the turning point he has singled out remains Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones.
