Casio documented Eminem wearing G-Shocks and announced a 6900 collaboration with him in 2013; watch publication Time+Tide identifies Spike Lee with an orange DW-6900. Together, the examples help explain the model’s cultural appeal without proving a broader preference.
What the celebrity record actually shows
The phrase “celebrity beater of choice” works as cultural shorthand, not a measured trend. The available examples are specific: Casio’s historical record of Eminem’s G-Shock association and collaboration, and a secondary publication’s identification of a watch worn by Spike Lee. Neither establishes how often celebrities wear G-Shocks or whether they choose them as daily beaters.
Eminem and the 2013 collaboration
In a press release dated December 6, 2013, Casio announced the GD-X6900MNM-1 collaboration for G-Shock’s 30th anniversary. Casio said Eminem had appeared wearing G-Shock in music videos and performances, and described the collaboration as based on the revamped GD-X6900 and personalized with Eminem imagery. This is strong evidence of Casio’s association with the artist at that time, not evidence of a current endorsement or present-day availability. Casio’s announcement
Model naming differs between Casio’s records: the press release uses GD-X6900MNM-1, while the company’s 6900 chronology records the 2013 Eminem collaboration as GD-X6900MM-1. Those are the source-specific strings; they should not be silently treated as identical. Casio’s 6900 series history

Spike Lee and the orange DW-6900
Time+Tide identifies Spike Lee wearing an orange DW-6900SC-4D and connects its color to his support for the New York Knicks. That is the publication’s identification of a photographed watch, rather than a Casio record or proof that Lee prefers it for everyday use. The article does not establish the watch’s ownership or service history, so the sighting should not be treated as a durability test. Time+Tide’s account
Why the 6900 is so recognizable
Casio dates the 6900 family to 1995, when it identifies the DW-6900-1V as the first model. Its visual signature is a rounded case, three circular display graphics, and a button on the front. Casio explains the circular layout as a way to arrange components efficiently for shock-resistant construction; that is the brand’s design rationale, not a comparative engineering test. - Shock-Resistant Durability: Built to withstand the toughest conditions, this G-Shock watch features a rugged resin case and bezel, perfect for outdoor adventures and extreme sports.
- 200M Water Resistance: Designed for water enthusiasts, it’s suitable for scuba diving, swimming, and snorkeling, providing reliable protection up to 200 meters.
- Electro-Luminescent Backlight: The blue-green EL backlight with afterglow ensures clear visibility of the time, day, and date, even in complete darkness.
- Precision Stopwatch & Countdown Timer: Measure elapsed and split times with the 1/100-second stopwatch, or set up a countdown timer with up to a 24-hour range, ideal for timing workouts or daily tasks.
- Multi-Alarm with Flash Alert: Stay on schedule with a customizable alarm, hourly chime, and flash alert that combines light and sound for added convenience.
The shape is distinctive without being elaborate: its stacked round graphics and prominent front button make the watch easy to recognize in a photograph or on screen. That visual clarity helps account for the 6900’s place in celebrity style stories, even when a sighting alone cannot tell us how the wearer uses the watch.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a G-Shock a good everyday beater watch?
The 6900’s shock-resistant construction, 200-meter water resistance on the cited DW-6900-1VH, resin case and band, and straightforward timing functions make that specific model a plausible choice for someone seeking a practical, robust digital watch. “Beater” is a use-case judgment, though: the right choice depends on the exact model, fit, features, and whether its size and styling suit the wearer. Casio’s stated origin story is that G-Shock began with a challenge to make a watch that would not break when dropped. That is the brand’s design ambition—not a promise that any watch is indestructible. Casio’s account of the G-Shock concept
