Ruben Alves’s French film Miss follows Alex, who revives a childhood dream of competing in the Miss France pageant. The comedy-drama uses the pageant’s ideals of beauty and femininity as a setting for a story about identity, self-confidence and belonging. Sources describe Alex’s gender differently, so those descriptions need to be kept distinct.
What is Miss about?
Alex has wanted to become Miss France since childhood. As an adult, Alex decides to pursue that ambition, entering the pageant with help from friends and a chosen family. The competition supplies the film’s central challenge: Alex must navigate a world organized around particular expectations of beauty and femininity while trying to claim a place in it.

France Télévisions’ synopsis describes Alex as concealing “his identity as a boy” while entering the competition. Québec’s classification authority, by contrast, calls Alex a non-binary character exploring different aspects of their identity. These are the respective sources’ framings, not interchangeable definitions or clinical descriptions. The distinction matters: the film’s premise can be summarized without treating one institutional synopsis as a universal account of Alex’s identity.
How does the pageant shape the film’s ideas about gender?
The pageant is more than a goal Alex hopes to reach. It is also the arena in which the film can put ideals of femininity and appearance on display. Alex’s pursuit raises questions about who gets to participate in that arena, what its standards demand, and how someone might make a space for themselves within rules they did not create.

The comedy-drama format lets the story approach those questions through both competition and personal relationships. Friends and chosen family support Alex’s effort, making belonging part of the plot rather than only an abstract theme. UniFrance lists identity and femininity among the film’s themes; that thematic description supports reading the pageant as a lens on gender expectations, while specific judgments about how successfully the film challenges those expectations remain matters of interpretation.

Where can you watch Miss?
AlloCiné lists VOD options including Canal VOD, Orange and SOONER, as well as DVD and Blu-ray formats. Check local listings before renting, streaming or buying; no particular service or edition can be confirmed from those format listings alone.

What the film’s reception records establish
UniFrance records international festival selections in 2020 and 2021 and notes that Alexandre Wetter received the César recognition for Most Promising Actor in 2021. These are specific career and festival records, not evidence by themselves of broad audience reception. TF1 Info characterized the film as a humorous fable that redefines femininity and invites reflection; that is the publication’s critical framing rather than a neutral classification or a verified direct quotation from Alves.
