Actor Francia Raisa made that case in a 2023 interview about How I Met Your Father, pointing to dating in your thirties, dating apps and LGBTQ+ people as parts of contemporary life the show brought into view.
Raisa’s case: TV should keep pace with life
“As time progresses, the shows we watch on television must also change and portray what life is like at that moment,” Raisa told People Chica in an interview published February 17, 2023.
She praised How I Met Your Father for bringing modern realities into a familiar sitcom format: “dating in your thirties, dating apps, the LGBTQ+ community.” Raisa said she appreciated that the show was “normalizing everything.” These are her reasons for valuing the series, not a measure of how every viewer responds to it.
Inclusion means more than putting a character on screen
Raisa’s other comments on representation point to two questions: whether characters are culturally specific and multidimensional, and whether actors from underrepresented communities can take leading roles in stories of many kinds.

Make cultural identity specific
In a 2021 interview with Complex, Raisa emphasized that Latinx communities include distinct cultures: “We all, within the Latinx community, come from different cultures. So it’s almost like, how do we tell the story?”
She discussed preparing to play Ana Torres, a Cuban-American character on grown-ish. Raisa said she is not Cuban, so she researched Cuban culture and sought help from Cuban friends. That account illustrates the care involved in portraying a particular background; it does not establish that one approach will satisfy every audience or production.

Let actors lead beyond identity-specific stories
Raisa also said she hoped Latina actors would have opportunities to lead in any kind of project, rather than being limited to Latinx films or television. The distinction matters: inclusion can mean telling stories grounded in a specific culture, while also allowing performers from that culture to take on roles whose plots are not defined by ethnicity.
Who makes the stories matters, too
Representation on screen is only one part of the question. Writers and decision-makers help determine which stories are developed, how characters are written and what happens when someone challenges a portrayal.

The Think Tank for Inclusion & Equity’s Spring 2021 report, Behind the Scenes: The State of Inclusion and Equity in TV Writing, drew on a survey of current television writers conducted in 2019. Among the report’s respondents, 73.7% of women said they had faced gender or sexual discrimination or harassment. It also reported that 58.6% of underrepresented writers said they had experienced discrimination or sexual harassment, compared with 39.7% of overrepresented writers; the report described the first rate as 1.5 times the second. These are findings from that survey sample and its definitions, not current workforce-wide rates.
The report also found underrepresented writers were twice as likely as overrepresented writers to say they had been fired, reprimanded or not asked back after speaking out against problematic content. That comparison does not prove that speaking out caused the outcome, but it illustrates why inclusion behind the scenes involves more than hiring: writers also need the ability to contribute and raise concerns.

- Set of 2 - Van Gogh Skeleton & The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso.
- High quality 3 MIL lamination for durability.
- Each poster measures 18 x 24 inches.
- Tear-resistant.
The report recommended hiring more showrunners, producers and executives from underrepresented populations, as well as creating clear advancement paths for support staff. Those are recommendations in the report, not evidence that the industry has adopted them universally. Read the full findings in the Think Tank for Inclusion & Equity report.

Raisa’s comments offer a practical way to think about inclusion without reducing it to a single casting choice or a checklist. A show can ask whether it reflects contemporary life, whether characters feel culturally grounded rather than interchangeable, and whether performers can lead across genres. It can also ask who has influence in the writers’ room and whether staff can challenge material without being pushed out.

No one interview or series proves that a particular approach works for every production. But Raisa’s examples make the underlying case clear: television is more relevant when it recognizes the varied lives people already lead—and gives those lives room to be specific, complex and ordinary.
