What Francine Pascal was known for
Pascal created Sweet Valley High, the teen series that follows twin sisters Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and their lives in the fictional California town of Sweet Valley. The original series began in 1983 and ran through 2003. Publishers Weekly’s obituary describes Pascal as the guiding creative force behind a publishing operation that grew beyond the books she wrote herself.
How large the Sweet Valley franchise became
By 2023, more than 700 titles across the Sweet Valley series had been published, and more than 250 million copies were in print worldwide, according to figures reported by Publishers Weekly in its 2024 obituary. Those totals refer to the broader Sweet Valley franchise, not just the original Sweet Valley High run. See the series figures.
Pascal’s role and the series’ legacy
Pascal’s name and creative direction anchored the series, but she did not write every installment. As the line expanded, other writers contributed to its many books and spin-offs. The original series ended in 2003, while spin-offs and later revivals continued the franchise.

Wendy Loggia, vice president and publisher at Delacorte Press, described the appeal as “sisterly love and rivalry, romance, friendship drama, secret diaries, evil twins” and said Pascal left behind a generation of grateful readers. Her remarks were reported by Publishers Weekly.
