Chain letters also promise luck or money, recruit petition signers, trade recipes and poems, or offer a small ritual of belonging. The wording and technology change; the social act of forwarding remains useful.
What makes a message a chain letter?
A chain letter asks its recipient to continue its circulation—by forwarding it, adding a name, sending something onward, or sharing a contribution. Its appeal can be frightening, hopeful, political, playful, or affectionate. The familiar seven-day threat is a memorable formula, not evidence that all chain letters share one origin or purpose.
That distinction matters. A poem passed among friends, a petition that gathers signatures, a money-making scheme, and malicious email can all involve onward transmission, but they do not have the same aims or consequences.
From handwritten notes to digital forwarding
Handwritten and copied messages
Chain letters did not begin with email. Smithsonian folklorist Betty Belanus describes handwritten examples circulated among schoolchildren as well as later photocopied and electronic versions. An academic study examined 33 variants collected from 1980 through 1995, showing how a message could be copied and altered as it moved. The available evidence does not establish a definitive first chain letter or verify a medieval origin; claims about medieval antecedents remain uncertain.

Email and changing social needs
Digital tools made copying and forwarding easier, but they did not invent the motives behind the practice. In a 2020 account, Belanus describes pandemic-era poetry and recipe chains that offered ways to manage anxiety and boredom, encourage others, and sustain a sense of community. A chain can therefore persist by adapting its appeal to the moment, not by keeping one fixed text intact.
What two email petitions reveal about diffusion
Petitions that accumulated appended signatures left researchers with unusually traceable evidence of how copies circulated. David Liben-Nowell and Jon Kleinberg analyzed two examples: an Iraq-war petition circulated in 2002–2003 and an NPR/PBS funding petition that began in 1995. They assembled 637 copies of the Iraq petition with nearly 20,000 signatories, and 316 copies of the NPR/PBS petition with 13,052 people. Those are counts from two reconstructed petition datasets, not estimates of how common chain letters are worldwide.

In the analyzed Iraq-petition tree, the median distance from a node to the root was nearly 300, and more than 90% of nodes had exactly one child. In other words, the reconstructed paths were often unusually deep and narrow rather than branching widely near the start. The authors wrote: “Rather than expanding to many individuals in a few steps, the trees are very narrow and continue reaching people several hundred levels deep.” Their 2008 PNAS paper describes the data and analysis.
Why deep paths do not describe every viral message
The petition pattern was surprising compared with simple epidemic-style expectations, but it should not be treated as a universal law of forwarding. The study reconstructed two particular petitions from copies and appended signatures; it did not observe every message or every transmission event.

A 2010 follow-up by Golub and Jackson added a methodological qualification: if researchers focus on unusually large diffusion events, that selection can combine with a basic branching-process model to produce long observed paths. This does not show that the earlier measurements were unreal. It offers an explanation for why the measured shape may appear in selected large cascades, and cautions against generalizing it to all sharing. The follow-up analysis examines that selection-bias argument.
Threats, petitions, exchanges, and schemes are not the same
The forwarding mechanism can look similar while the requested action and claimed consequence differ substantially.

| Message type | Typical appeal | Requested action | How to assess it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threat or luck chain | Fear of a consequence, or hope for good fortune | Forward the message | The threat or promise is part of the message’s persuasion; forwarding is not evidence that its claim is true. |
| Petition | Political or institutional change | Sign, append a name, or circulate the petition | Consider the petition’s actual request and provenance; transmission counts alone do not establish its impact. |
| Poem, recipe, or friendship exchange | Entertainment, encouragement, or belonging | Pass along a text or contribution | Assess it as a social exchange, not automatically as a financial or security threat. |
| Money chain scheme | Promised returns for joining or recruiting | Send money or recruit others | Promises based on recruitment cannot produce returns for everyone; legal treatment depends on the scheme and jurisdiction. |
For readers in Wisconsin, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection explains its state-specific guidance on chain letters. Do not apply warnings about money schemes to benign recipe, poetry, or friendship chains simply because they ask people to pass something along.

A malicious program can use email transmission, but that does not make ordinary chain letters malware. The FBI’s 2019 retrospective says the Melissa virus disrupted approximately one million email accounts. That example concerns a malicious email virus, not a benign letter asking recipients to forward a message, and should not be used to label all chain letters dangerous. The FBI’s account of Melissa describes that separate incident.

The durable feature of the chain letter is not a particular threat or technology. It is the invitation to make a recipient the next link—an invitation that can be reshaped to fit fear, a cause, a joke, or a moment when people want to feel connected.
