A portrait in Moe’s Tavern during Fortnite’s 2025 Simpsons season showed Apu with the same yellow skin tone as Homer, Barney and Principal Skinner. After viewers accused the game of whitewashing him, Epic Games said the image was unintentional and would be adjusted in its next release. The available reports do not confirm whether or when that correction shipped.
What did players object to?
The controversy centered on a Be Sharps portrait displayed inside Moe’s Tavern. In that image, Apu appeared with the yellow skin tone used for the other characters in the group. GameSpot reported that a separate image in the tavern showed Apu in his familiar television appearance, making the two depictions visibly different. GameSpot’s November 6, 2025 report and VideoGamer’s report, updated the same day describe the image and response.
“Whitewashing” was the accusation observers made about the portrait’s change in appearance. The reports establish a discrepancy in an in-game image; they do not establish that Epic deliberately changed Apu’s identity or removed him from the season.
What did Epic say?
Epic’s Fortnite Status account was quoted in both reports on November 6, 2025: “This wasn’t intentional. It’s being adjusted in our next release.” That statement describes the portrait as an unintended mistake and promises a future adjustment. It does not confirm that the adjustment was later released, so the correction’s timing and completion remain unverified in the available accounts.

Was Apu removed from Fortnite’s Simpsons season?
No. The reported issue was the appearance of Apu in one Be Sharps portrait, not evidence that he had been removed from the season. The separate tavern image reportedly showed him in his familiar appearance. The episode therefore concerned inconsistent artwork in the game environment, rather than a reported removal of the character.
Why did the image draw criticism?
Apu’s portrayal has been part of wider debate about representation in The Simpsons. GameSpot connected the sensitivity around the character to the documentary The Problem with Apu and Hank Azaria’s decision to stop voicing him. That is context for why the portrait attracted attention; the immediate dispute described in the reports was about this specific in-game image.

When was the Fortnite Simpsons season?
Epic announced the season’s launch for November 1, 2025, and described Springfield Island as an 80-player Battle Royale experience, alongside a Simpsons Battle Pass and weekly animated shorts. GameSpot reported that the season was scheduled to run through November 29, 2025. Those dates are historical; the cited sources do not establish that the event is currently playable. Epic’s launch announcement also said the shorts were available in Fortnite and on Disney+. Epic’s season announcement has further details.

Later announcements put the season’s reach above 80 million players but gave different figures for time played. The Walt Disney Company said on June 17, 2026, that the prior fall’s season generated 780 million hours; Epic said on June 18, 2026, that it generated over 750 million hours. These are the organizations’ separate reported figures, not a basis for treating either as independently verified or for assuming one formulation is an error. Disney’s June 17 announcement and Epic’s announcement provide their respective figures.
