Five Classic Jugalbandis That Show What the Term Means

Five performances show how jugalbandi works as a musical conversation between soloists, across instrumental, vocal, and voice-and-instrument pairings.

Jugalbandi is a performance in which two soloists share the musical foreground and respond to one another. It is not a fixed instrument combination or simply any duet. These five examples make the idea audible across instrumental, vocal, and voice-and-instrument pairings.

What makes a performance a jugalbandi?

The defining feature in these examples is the relationship between the lead performers: each develops a musical line while leaving room for the other to answer, echo, or vary it. The partners may play different instruments, sing together, or combine voice and instrument. Tabla or pakhawaj players provide rhythmic support, but the exchange at the center is between the two soloists.

The source article frames many successful pairings as musicians who shared a stylistic tradition, trained under the same guru, or were siblings. It suggests that familiarity helped them respond fluidly. That is an explanation for these examples, not a rule that every jugalbandi must follow. The article also describes past performances as featuring contemporaries and notes a senior-junior distinction; those observations should not be mistaken for a universal definition.

Five examples to hear the exchange

Pairing Type and timbre Raga and rhythmic frame identified What the example demonstrates
Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan Sitar and sarod; tabla by Alla Rakha Lalit; slow vilambit gat followed by a faster drut composition, both in Teentaal Contrasting instrumental lines working within a shared raga and tala
Faiyaz Ahmed Khan and Niaz Ahmed Khan Sibling vocalists of the Kirana gharana; tabla by Sheikh Dawood Darbari Kanada; tala not stated in the source A vocal pairing shows that jugalbandi is not limited to instruments
Kishori Amonkar and Hariprasad Chaurasia Voice and bansuri; tabla players Anindo Chatterjee and Balkrishna Iyer Two compositions in Lalit, both in Teentaal Voice and instrument can shape and answer the same raga material
Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia Santoor and bansuri; pakhawaj by Bhavani Shankar and tabla by Subhankar Bannerjee Raga and tala not stated in the source A thematic concert pairing contrasting instrumental timbres
Vilayat Khan and Bismillah Khan Sitar and shehnai Bhairavi in the excerpt described by the article A meeting of distinct instrumental colors; a related 1994 release is a different, Yamani performance

Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan: sitar and sarod in Lalit

This is the clearest example of two instrumentalists building contrasting but responsive lines within a shared musical frame. The source identifies the morning raga as Lalit and describes a slow vilambit gat in Teentaal followed by a faster drut composition in the same tala. Alla Rakha accompanies on tabla. As you listen, follow how the melodic exchange changes pace while the rhythmic cycle remains shared.

A historical HMV catalog lists a 1965 release by Shankar and Khan with Alla Rakha. That entry documents a commercial recording by the trio, but it does not establish the date or release identity of the particular Lalit excerpt discussed here. Shankar’s official label, East Meets West Music, says its archive includes live performance audio, film footage, interviews, and studio masters, and is a destination for exploring archival material.

Faiyaz Ahmed Khan and Niaz Ahmed Khan: two voices

The short passage in Darbari Kanada features the sibling vocalists Faiyaz Ahmed Khan and Niaz Ahmed Khan, identified with the Kirana gharana, with tabla accompaniment by Sheikh Dawood. This pairing makes the point plainly: jugalbandi describes a musical partnership, not a required combination of instruments. Listen for the singers’ phrases and responses rather than expecting an instrumental lead-and-accompaniment setup.

Kishori Amonkar and Hariprasad Chaurasia: voice and bansuri

Here, vocalist Kishori Amonkar and bansuri player Hariprasad Chaurasia share two compositions in Lalit, both in Teentaal. The article describes this voice-and-instrument pairing type as a more recent phenomenon, without establishing a broader chronology. The musical interest is in how the same raga material can be carried by a human voice and a flute, with tabla accompaniment from Anindo Chatterjee and Balkrishna Iyer.

Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia: santoor and bansuri

Sharma’s santoor and Chaurasia’s bansuri meet in a thematic concert, supported by Bhavani Shankar on pakhawaj and Subhankar Bannerjee on tabla. The article does not identify the raga, tala, or date in its description. The pairing is useful for hearing a different kind of contrast: two instrumental timbres sharing the foreground, with percussionists providing rhythmic support.

Vilayat Khan and Bismillah Khan: sitar and shehnai

The article’s excerpt pairs sitarist Vilayat Khan with shehnai player Bismillah Khan in Bhairavi. Their instruments create a strong timbral contrast, making the back-and-forth especially easy to notice. A related physical release is documented, but it should not be confused with this excerpt: the official Vilayat Khan discography lists Ebadat: Live at Barbican as a 1994 CD and identifies its raga as Yamani. Apple Music describes the album as a live Barbican recording from October 1994; that does not establish that the Bhairavi performance is on the CD.

An HMV catalog also lists a 1966 shehnai-and-violin jugalbandi by Bismillah Khan and V. G. Jog. It is evidence of an early commercial instrumental pairing, not a date for the sitar-and-shehnai excerpt here.

How to listen for the partnership

  • Follow the exchange. Notice when one soloist introduces a phrase and the other repeats, varies, or answers it.
  • Compare the colors. Sitar and sarod share a plucked-string family, while sitar and shehnai or voice and bansuri offer more contrasting sounds.
  • Track the shared frame. In the Shankar–Khan and Amonkar–Chaurasia descriptions, Lalit and Teentaal give the partners common melodic and rhythmic ground.
  • Separate lead from support. Hear tabla and pakhawaj as rhythmic partners to the performance, while distinguishing their role from the central exchange between the two soloists.

These are listening prompts based on the reported descriptions, not a detailed transcription of the performances. The five examples are illustrative rather than a ranking: together, they show that jugalbandi is best understood through interaction, not instrumentation alone.
