He was 86, according to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Who was Flaco Jiménez?
Jiménez was a Tejano musician whose accordion playing made him one of conjunto music’s most recognized ambassadors. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) described his career as expanding the music from his San Antonio community to audiences across the United States and around the world. His nickname, “Flaco,” means “skinny” in Spanish, the Associated Press reported.
Conjunto is a regional tradition shaped by accordion-led dance music and Mexican American communities along the Texas-Mexico borderlands. Jiménez remained rooted in that tradition even as he worked with musicians from country, rock, blues and other scenes. Tejano and conjunto are related musical terms, but they are not interchangeable labels: Jiménez’s career crossed both contexts while remaining closely identified with conjunto.
A family tradition from San Antonio
Jiménez inherited music as a family practice. His father, Santiago Jiménez, was a professional Tex-Mex musician; his grandfather, Patricio Jiménez, played accordion in polka and waltz groups. Smithsonian Folkways notes that Flaco grew up within this musical lineage and carried its sound into new settings.

From conjunto stages to wider musical circles
Jiménez’s collaborations showed how easily the accordion could move between traditions without losing its conjunto character. He worked with guitarist Ry Cooder on the 1976 album Chicken Skin Music, appeared on the Rolling Stones’ 1994 album Voodoo Lounge, and was part of the Texas Tornados with Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers and Freddy Fender. The NEA also records his work with Los Super Seven.

The NEA reports five Grammy Awards, including three for solo work, and a separate Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. It also identifies him as a 2012 National Heritage Fellow and a 2022 National Medal of Arts recipient. The Lifetime Achievement Award is distinct from the five-award figure.
The NEA called him a “trailblazer of Conjunto” in its statement on his death. That description reflects a career in which cultural stewardship and musical exchange went together: Jiménez helped make a community-rooted form audible in settings well beyond its home region.
