These five nonfiction books were recommended by subject experts for a 2024 selection published by Scroll.in on December 26, 2024. They span memoir, politics, business and economy, art, and the environment. The list is a curated set of recommendations—not a sales ranking, scored comparison, or formal awards list.
Memoir: Melting Point by Rachel Cockerell
Recommended by Jay Prosser, a professor of humanities, Melting Point traces three generations of Cockerell’s family and the search for Jewish homelands before the Balfour Declaration. Its accounts include proposed settlements in Galveston, Angola, and Mesopotamia.
The book is assembled entirely from quotations drawn from diaries, letters, memoirs, and articles by people who witnessed the events. That documentary form makes the family story throughline emerge from the historical record rather than a conventional narrator’s account.
Politics: London, 1984: Conflict and Change in the Radical City by Stephen Brooke
Recommended by Kieran Connell, a senior lecturer in contemporary British history, Brooke’s book examines political movements in London and campaigns against homophobia, racism, and other forms of discrimination. It also covers efforts to improve housing and childcare.

They offer five distinct routes into nonfiction: documentary family history, social and political history, the economics of making and buying, experimental photography, and environmental debates about land. The source gives no common scoring method or comparative ratings, so the books are best understood as expert picks across different subjects, not as ranked alternatives.
