Forrest Gump 2 did not reach production after its creators reconsidered the project in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Screenwriter Eric Roth said he submitted a sequel draft on September 10 and met with Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis the next day; they felt the story no longer had meaning. Hanks later offered a related but distinct explanation: the original film’s story felt complete.
Why was Forrest Gump 2 shelved?
Roth’s account is the clearest explanation of the project’s fate. As quoted by ABC News, he said he, Hanks, and Zemeckis met on September 11, 2001, to talk about the attacks and the state of the country. Roth recalled that they looked at one another and concluded, “this movie has no meaning anymore” in that sense.

Roth also summarized their reaction by saying, “When 9/11 occurred I think we felt, maybe, everything we’d written was meaningless,” according to ABC News. The Guardian likewise reported Roth’s account that he delivered the completed draft the day before the attacks and that the events of September 11 changed how the team viewed it.
That is evidence that the filmmakers set the project aside after reconsidering its meaning—not proof of a documented, formal studio cancellation. The available accounts do not establish a specific cancellation process or identify a single official decision-maker.

Was there really a sequel script?
Yes. Roth said he submitted a draft on September 10, 2001. This distinguishes the project from a sequel idea that never became a screenplay. But the draft itself is not available in the sources cited here, so descriptions of its scenes come from Roth’s recollections, not from an independently reviewed script.
What was supposed to happen in the sequel?
Roth described a story that would have placed Forrest alongside several major events and public figures of the 1990s. These are reported elements of an unproduced screenplay, not scenes from a completed film.
- Forrest’s young son would have AIDS and face exclusion from school, amid a conflict over school desegregation busing in Florida.
- Forrest would be in the back of O.J. Simpson’s Bronco during the 1994 police chase.
- Forrest would become a successful ballroom dancer and eventually dance with Princess Diana at a charity event.
- Forrest would wait near a government building in Oklahoma City for a Native American partner when the building exploded—the Oklahoma City bombing.
ABC News reported Roth’s recollections of these plot points, which were also summarized by The Guardian. Because the screenplay has not been made available in these accounts, the details should be treated as Roth’s description rather than verified script text.
How does Tom Hanks’s explanation fit?
In a later account reported by CinemaBlend in 2024, Hanks described sequel talks as brief and said he, Zemeckis, and Roth felt the first story had reached its end. That perspective does not mean no draft existed: Roth specifically said he turned one in. The accounts describe different parts of development—Roth’s recollection of a submitted screenplay and the team’s broader sense that a follow-up was unnecessary.

Was the sequel based on Gump & Co.?
Winston Groom wrote Gump & Co., a follow-up novel to Forrest Gump. ABC News reported that Paramount had acquired the film rights, citing Groom’s statement in 2007 that the studio owned them. That establishes a connection between the novel and the studio’s rights, but it does not establish that Roth’s proposed screenplay directly adapted the book.

The cited accounts document a project shelved after 2001; they do not report a revival or current production. They also cannot rule out every later private conversation. On the evidence available, there is no documented sequel moving forward.
