If you’re choosing between Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox and Netflix’s Amanda Knox, know that they are different kinds of programs about the same case: Hulu’s 2025 title is a scripted limited series, while Netflix’s 2016 title is a documentary built around interviews. For a current comparison, there is also a separate Hulu documentary, Mouth of the Wolf: Amanda Knox Returns to Italy, which began streaming in January 2026.
What’s the difference between the Hulu series and the Netflix documentary?
Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is a scripted limited series. Hulu says it follows Knox’s study-abroad experience, wrongful imprisonment, and fight to prove her innocence. It premiered August 20, 2025; Grace Van Patten stars, and KJ Steinberg is its creator and an executive producer. Hulu’s official series page describes the story as tracing Knox’s fight to prove her innocence and reclaim her freedom.

Netflix’s Amanda Knox is a documentary released in 2016. Netflix describes it as a story about the 2007 murder of Knox’s roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Perugia, and the investigation and trial that followed. Its interviews include Knox, former co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, journalists, forensic experts, and an attorney for Rudy Guede. The Netflix Tudum overview names these participants; Netflix’s title page classifies the film as a documentary and says Knox and people close to the case speak out.

Should you watch the Netflix documentary after the Hulu series?
Yes, if you want a documentary’s interview-based account alongside the scripted series. The formats serve different purposes: the Hulu series dramatizes Knox’s story, while Netflix presents interviews with Knox and a range of people connected to the case. The Netflix title is not a companion film released with Hulu’s series; it dates to 2016.
The Netflix documentary’s roster of interviewees offers perspectives beyond Knox’s own, including those of Sollecito, Mignini, journalists, forensic experts, and an attorney for Guede. That does not make it a substitute for the scripted series, or establish that either work is a complete account of the case. These are descriptions of the programs and their stated contents, not an independent adjudication of the legal proceedings.

Where does Hulu’s 2026 documentary fit?
Mouth of the Wolf: Amanda Knox Returns to Italy is a separate documentary, not a new version of Netflix’s 2016 film or another name for Hulu’s scripted series. ABC News Studios announced it on January 22, 2026, for streaming January 26 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for U.S. bundle subscribers. The announcement describes Knox returning to Italy for an Innocence Project conference and meeting prosecutor Giuliano Mignini. It says Christopher Robinson directed and filmed the documentary, which was produced for Hulu by Knox Robinson Productions and ABC News Studios.
