The clearest glimpse of his student work comes from a demanding team project: he was responsible for designing the aircraft’s aerodynamics, while four classmates worked on other parts. In his autobiography, Kalam also recalls that a professor gave him a tight deadline and warned that his scholarship could be stopped if he missed it.
When Kalam studied at Madras Institute of Technology
A children’s biography excerpt says Kalam moved to Madras in 1955 to study aerospace engineering. An IIT Delhi Library biography summary places his specialization in aeronautical engineering in 1957. Those dates describe different milestones, so they do not necessarily conflict. The Government of India’s presidential profile also identifies aeronautical engineering as his specialization. The course is described here as aeronautical engineering, the historical term used for Kalam’s studies. Later institutional accounts may use “aerospace engineering”; an IIT Madras Heritage Centre oral-history interview confirms that terminology and departmental structures changed over time. A five-student team designed an aircraft
In Wings of Fire, Kalam recalls that after his coursework, he and four colleagues were assigned to design a low-level attack aircraft. The assignment divided the work among five students:

This was a student aircraft-design project. It should not be mistaken for work on the rockets or space missions associated with Kalam’s later career. Read Kalam’s autobiography, Wings of Fire.
The deadline and the scholarship warning
Kalam says his design teacher, Professor Srinivasan, reviewed his progress and found it disappointing. In Kalam’s recollection, he asked for more time; the professor set a deadline and warned that Kalam’s scholarship would be stopped if he failed to complete the drawing in time. This is Kalam’s account in his autobiography, not an independently corroborated college record.

The episode shows the pressure of a demanding assignment and the importance of getting the design finished. It also shows that the project depended on several kinds of engineering work, not on one student doing everything.
How engineering connected to Kalam’s later work
In an official presidential questionnaire, Kalam described aerodynamics, mathematics, structural materials, and control and guidance as foundational sciences for rocket and space technology. Those subjects help explain how engineering knowledge can connect to later work in space. They do not mean that his MIT aircraft assignment was a rocket project. Read the presidential questionnaire.

What we can—and cannot—say about student life
The available accounts give a specific project and deadline, but they do not establish what Kalam’s ordinary daily schedule was like, which exact courses he took, what grades he earned, or what his social life at MIT was like. It is more accurate to focus on the details he describes: studying aeronautical engineering, sharing a complex aircraft assignment with four teammates, and working under a deadline.

Kalam’s autobiography, Wings of Fire, provides his first-person account of the project and his student years, though it covers his life more broadly and is not specifically a children’s book.
