Amemuso Choir announced that soprano Ifunanya Nwangene died on January 31, 2026, at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, after a snakebite. She was 26 and had appeared on The Voice Nigeria. The hospital’s account says she developed severe neurotoxic complications and received emergency treatment, including polyvalent antivenom.
Who was Ifunanya Nwangene?
Nwangene was a soprano with Amemuso Choir and a singer who appeared on The Voice Nigeria. Contemporary reports identified her as 26, but did not establish a birth date. The choir’s announcement was attributed to its music director, Sam Ezugwu. In a tribute quoted by Punch Newspapers, the choir said: “Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed.”
What happened before her death?
Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, gave its account in a clarification dated February 1, 2026. Dr. Bioku Muftau, the hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, said Nwangene developed severe neurotoxic complications after the snakebite. The hospital said its staff provided resuscitation, intravenous fluids and intranasal oxygen, and administered polyvalent snake antivenom. Her condition deteriorated before a planned transfer to intensive care.
The hospital rejected claims that antivenom was unavailable or that its response was inadequate. At the same time, public discussion and accounts from friends raised concerns about access to treatment. Those concerns and the hospital’s denial are reported positions; the available accounts do not independently establish negligence or resolve the dispute. In its clarification, Muftau said: “We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily.”
