Ananda Lewis, the former BET and MTV host whose work included Teen Summit, MTV Live and Total Request Live, died at 52 in June 2025 after living with breast cancer. Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, announced her death on Facebook on June 11.
What was reported about her death
Emory announced the death in a Facebook post. The Associated Press quoted her remembrance: “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms,” followed by “Lord, rest her soul.” The AP reported that Lewis was 52 and had been battling breast cancer; ABC News and the Los Angeles Times also reported her death at 52. The Los Angeles Times reported hospice care, attributing that information to Emory. Associated Press; ABC News; Los Angeles Times.
Those reports connected her death with her breast-cancer battle, but the cited coverage does not establish a more specific medically documented cause of death.
From BET’s Teen Summit to MTV
Before joining MTV in 1997, Lewis hosted BET’s Teen Summit, a program about issues facing Black youth. The show brought young people into conversations with community leaders, entertainers and politicians. Among the people Lewis interviewed were Kobe Bryant, Tupac Shakur, Louis Farrakhan and then-first lady Hillary Clinton, according to the AP.

At MTV, she hosted or worked as a VJ on MTV Live, Hot Zone and Total Request Live. In AP-reproduced comments about moving from BET to MTV, Lewis described the transition as an opportunity to keep growing: “One of the main things we dealt with on a consistent basis, like the underlying theme of all the shows is you’ve got to get out there and live your life. The bottom line is this is about you, so how do you want to grow and whom do you want to develop into?” She added that she could not tell young people to take opportunities while refusing one herself. Later television work
Lewis went on to host the syndicated The Ananda Lewis Show, which ran for one season, and later worked as a correspondent for The Insider, the AP reported. Looking back on daytime television in comments about her 2001 show, she said, “There’s only so much different you can do in daytime, which is what I’m learning. There’s a certain way, I guess, people are used to doing things and that way’s not going to change for a while.” She described her goal as making the format work more smoothly rather than reinventing it. Her public breast-cancer journey
Lewis disclosed in 2020 that she had breast cancer, initially describing it as Stage 3. In an interview with ABC News in October 2024, she said it had progressed to Stage 4. ABC reported that she discussed declining a medically recommended double mastectomy and the approaches she chose. These details describe Lewis’s personal decisions and experience; they do not establish that her choices are appropriate or effective for anyone else. ABC News.
The AP reported that Lewis later urged women not to put off mammograms, saying: “I need you to share this with the women in your life who may be as stubborn as I was about mammograms, and I need you to tell them that they have to do it,” Lewis said. “Early detection, especially for breast cancer, changes your outcome. It can save their life.” Her appeal was rooted in her own experience; decisions about screening and care should be discussed with a qualified health professional. Associated Press.
