That makes “remake coming” a development headline, not confirmation that the film is currently in production or has a planned theatrical date. A December 19, 2024 Production Weekly listing also labeled the feature as in development, but its story description should not be treated as a final or officially confirmed synopsis. Is the Forbidden Planet remake still happening?
The available announcements establish that the project was reported in development in November 2024 and was listed as in development by Production Weekly in December 2024. A Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter dated August 6, 2026, outlining studio slate projects, does not mention Forbidden Planet. That letter is not a comprehensive project-status list, so its omission does not show that the remake was canceled or stalled. No release timing or definitive current status is established by these sources. Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 6, 2026 shareholder letter
What was the original Forbidden Planet about?
Fred M. Wilcox directed the original Forbidden Planet, released in 1956 and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen. The film is described as a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Those details provide context for the remake announcement; they do not establish which story elements the new version will retain.

Does the new film have a confirmed plot?
No plot details were included in Deadline’s announcement. Production Weekly’s December 2024 listing describes a 23rd-century starship, the C-57D, reaching Altair IV to investigate the disappearance of a previous starship. In that listing, Dr. Edward Morbius warns the crew against landing, while a deadly creature and a relic of an ancient civilization feature in the description. This is listing copy, not a confirmed final synopsis, so it should not be taken as the remake’s settled plot.

The phrase “revisionist version” signals that the project was characterized as a new interpretation, but no specific creative changes have been announced. Without a confirmed synopsis, cast, or production details, it is not possible to compare the new film’s story with the original or say whether it will follow the 1956 film scene by scene.
