Mike Tyson did not physically attack a reporter during the live TV interview behind the viral “destroying a reporter” phrasing. In a September 2014 appearance on Toronto’s CP24, Tyson cursed at anchor Nathan Downer after Downer asked whether Tyson’s endorsement of mayor Rob Ford could hurt Ford’s campaign, given Tyson’s rape conviction. Tyson was there to promote his one-man show, Undisputed Truth.
What happened in the CP24 interview?
The confrontation was a verbal exchange, not a physical assault. Tyson insulted Downer and used profanity during the live interview. TheGrio’s September 11, 2014 account printed Downer’s question as: “Some of your critics would say, ‘This is a race for mayor, we know you’re a convicted rapist, this could hurt his campaign.’ How would you respond to that?” TheGrio’s report also printed Tyson’s response with profanity masked: “It’s so interesting because you come across like a nice guy but you’re really a piece of s***. F*** you, that was a piece of s***.”
The question connected Tyson’s endorsement of Rob Ford to the Toronto mayoral race. It was not simply a question about Tyson’s show, which was the promotional purpose of his appearance.
Why was Tyson on CP24?
Tyson was promoting Undisputed Truth, his one-man show. After the interview, a Tyson representative told TMZ that the team believed the conversation was supposed to focus on the show. The representative said they felt “deceived, bamboozled” when Downer went off topic. That is the representative’s account of the expected interview terms, not independent confirmation of an agreement. TMZ reported the statement on September 10, 2014.

Who was the reporter, and what happened afterward?
The interviewer was Nathan Downer, a CP24 anchor. TheGrio reported that Downer later posted on Twitter: “I’m okay everybody. Unfortuantlely my question hurt Mike Tyson’s feelings. That was not my intentions. My apolgies for the language (sic).” The spelling and “(sic)” are reproduced as printed in the report.
Why the clip can be misleading
Short cuts of the exchange can omit the question that preceded Tyson’s response and the Rob Ford campaign context. A 2022 USA Today fact check, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, distinguished the real interview from a dramatized interview scene in Hulu’s Mike and noted that the actual exchange concerned Ford’s campaign. The fact check provides that comparison.
