No. Foo Fighters said it had not been asked for permission to use “My Hero” at Donald Trump’s August 23, 2024, rally in Glendale, Arizona, and that it would not have approved the use. Trump’s campaign, however, said it had a license to play the song. The available reporting does not establish whether that license covered this specific performance.
What happened at the Glendale rally?
“My Hero” played as Trump introduced Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at the rally on August 23, 2024. Foo Fighters responded “No” when asked online whether the band had let Trump use the track. A band representative later said, “Foo Fighters were not asked permission and if they were they would not have granted it,” according to Variety’s report.

Did Trump’s campaign have a license to play the song?
Campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung told The Hill, “We have a license to play the song,” as reported by Variety. That is the campaign’s stated position; the reporting does not publish the license or specify its terms.

How can the band object if the campaign says it had a license?
Artist approval or objection and a public-performance license are not necessarily the same thing. A campaign or venue may rely on a license for public performances without the artist personally approving a particular use. Variety described the question as whether a venue’s blanket license covered the campaign rally and reported BMI’s explanation of a Political Entities License and its objection procedure.
According to Variety’s 2024 account, BMI said its Political Entities License authorized campaigns to publicly perform more than 15 million musical works wherever campaign events occurred. BMI also said songwriters or publishers could object and have their works excluded. That general description does not establish that “My Hero” was covered for this Glendale performance.

What remains unconfirmed?
The reporting supports two distinct claims: Foo Fighters said it had not been asked and would not have approved the use; the Trump campaign said it had a license. It does not establish whether the license covered this specific song and performance. The sources cited here provide neither the license document nor a legal ruling resolving the dispute, so they do not support a definitive conclusion that the use was legally unauthorized—or that the campaign’s license conclusively authorized it.
