Mick Fleetwood became a distinctive drummer through self-directed listening, a range of pop and blues influences, and decades of close musical interplay with bassist John McVie. Calling him “one of the best” is a judgment, not a provable universal ranking; the case for his stature is clearer in how his playing adapts to Fleetwood Mac’s songs, from the steady toms of “Albatross” to the sharper drive of “Go Your Own Way.”
How did Mick Fleetwood learn to play drums?
Fleetwood described himself as self-taught. In a 2004 interview with Andy Darlington for Hot Press Annual, he recalled learning in his attic by playing along to records: “I was self-taught. I just taught myself in my attic, playing along to records (on the radiogram).” His account points to close listening and imitation rather than formal musical schooling as the starting point of his development. Read the Hot Press Annual interview transcript.
Two influences Fleetwood named help explain the range he absorbed. Tony Meehan, the English drummer associated with the Shadows, was an early model. Later, Sonny Freeman, who played with B.B. King, influenced Fleetwood’s blues shuffles. Fleetwood said of Freeman, “Blues Shuffles is something that I’m seemingly fairly good at. And I get that from him. That’s his influence.”
How did playing with John McVie shape his drumming?
Fleetwood’s early London groups included the Cheynes, Peter B’s and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, where he played alongside bassist John McVie and guitarist Peter Green. As Fleetwood recalled it, he and McVie became the “nuts-and-bolts” through the band’s changes. Years of playing together built an “unspoken thing”: a musical connection that did not need to be spelled out each time. Fleetwood discusses the partnership in the Hot Press Annual transcript.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That partnership is a useful way to understand Fleetwood’s contribution without overstating it. Drums and bass can anchor a song while leaving space for its melody and vocals; Fleetwood’s account suggests that he and McVie developed that foundation through sustained collaboration. It does not mean either musician alone determined every arrangement.
What songs show how his playing changed with the music?
The examples Fleetwood discussed show why a single signature move cannot explain his style. His parts serve different musical settings, from blues-rooted material to the later band’s pop-rock sound.

| Song | What the interview highlights | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| “Albatross” | Fleetwood’s “rock-steady toms” | A grounded, measured contribution in early Fleetwood Mac’s blues-based sound. |
| “Dreams” | Fleetwood’s drumming is identified as part of the track | A later song context in which the drum part serves the whole arrangement rather than relying on a conspicuous solo moment. |
| “Go Your Own Way” | “Sharp drum-snaps” | A more pointed, propulsive feel in the group’s later pop-rock sound. |
| “Second Hand News” | Fleetwood’s drumming is identified as part of the track | Another example of his work within the later band’s sound. |
The descriptions and track references come from the 2004 Hot Press Annual interview transcript. Listen across the examples for changes in the music’s demands: a steadier foundation in “Albatross,” compared with the sharper accents associated with “Go Your Own Way.” The broader point is adaptability, not a claim that one kind of drumming is inherently superior.
What does “The Chain” reveal about Fleetwood Mac’s collaboration?
Fleetwood recalled “The Chain” as a song assembled through collective studio work. The band jammed; John McVie supplied the bass riff; Stevie Nicks later brought lyrics; and Lindsey Buckingham arranged the parts into a song. Fleetwood’s role belongs in that collaborative picture: he was part of the playing that helped create the track, not its sole author. His account illustrates how the rhythm section could contribute to a song’s identity while other members shaped its lyrics and arrangement. See Fleetwood’s account in the Hot Press Annual transcript.

Was Fleetwood’s modesty a sign that he lacked skill?
No. Fleetwood has sometimes spoken about his own playing with self-deprecation. In a 2014 CBS News interview excerpt reproduced in his official site’s archive, he said, “I’m not being overly humble — the easiest way, I don’t really know what I’m doing.” That is evidence of how he described himself, not a technical assessment of his ability. The recorded examples and his accounts of learning, influence and long-term collaboration offer a more useful basis for understanding his musicianship. The excerpt appears in Fleetwood’s official site archive.
In a separate 2014 interview with TIME, Fleetwood described the childhood dream behind his career as “this funny little creature who just wanted to play drums and play music.” The remark captures the persistence of that ambition; it does not establish a ranking among drummers.
