What was the lawsuit about?
“Sara,” written and sung by Stevie Nicks, appeared on Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. In a September 27, 1980 report, The Washington Post identified Carol Hinton as a Michigan poet who alleged that she had written the song’s lyrics as a poem in 1978, before the song appeared. The report describes Hinton’s claim; it does not establish that she authored the lyrics.
A July 1981 United Press International report, preserved in an archival repost, said Hinton had sent Warner Bros. Records a poem titled “Sarah,” which she wrote about her youngest child. According to that report, she hoped it would be used in a song and sought royalties and acknowledgment as its author. Those details are reported as Hinton’s position, not as findings by a court.
What happened to the case?
In 1980, the case was still pending
The Washington Post reported that the case was in trial court and was moving toward discovery at the end of October 1980. Nicks’s attorney, Mickey Shapiro, said at the time: “We’re not inclined to a settlement. I think the case will be heard on its own merits.” That was his stated position in September 1980, not the eventual outcome.

In 1981, the complaint was dropped after a settlement
UPI reported on July 22, 1981, that Hinton had dropped her complaint the previous week after reaching an out-of-court settlement. A November 1, 1981 CREEM report also described a settlement. Neither account is the settlement instrument or a court decision on who wrote “Sara.”
Was the settlement $1,500?
The amount is not independently confirmed. UPI said it was undisclosed, while reporting that sources estimated it at about $1,500. CREEM later reported a $1,500 settlement. Because the accounts are press reports and no settlement document is available, the careful description is that reports put the amount at about $1,500—not that a verified record establishes the exact payment.

Did Stevie Nicks admit copying the poem?
No admission is established by the reporting. UPI attributed to Nicks the view that the similarity was a quirk and reported that she described it as “karma.” That characterization is not an admission that she copied Hinton’s poem.

What the record does—and does not—show
- Hinton was identified in contemporaneous reporting as the plaintiff, and she claimed her poem predated “Sara.”
