Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach was not canceled when creator Scott Cawthon announced his retirement in June 2021. Steel Wool Studios released it that December, later added the free Ruin story DLC and continued issuing technical updates. Cawthon said the franchise would continue under a trusted successor he would choose, but the announcement did not name that person—and the available official updates do not establish a current long-term roadmap for Security Breach.
What did Scott Cawthon announce when he retired?
On June 17, 2021, Cawthon said he was retiring from his then-current role in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. He said the series would continue and that a trusted person of his choosing would eventually take over. He did not identify that person or give a date for the handover. In the same statement, he said he wanted to spend more time with his family and make games for fun. GameSpot’s June 17, 2021 report quotes the announcement, including Cawthon’s words: “Someone of my choosing, and someone that I trust.” He also said, “I will still be around, just not in the capacity that I used to be.”
The announcement was not a cancellation notice for Security Breach. The game was already being developed by Steel Wool Studios. A contemporaneous Game Informer report noted that the implications for the game were not yet clear, but the game went on to release later that year.
When did Security Breach come out?
Steel Wool executive producer Ray McCaffrey announced a December 16, 2021 release date. The game arrived on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC that month. It later reached Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One in November 2022, then Nintendo Switch in April 2023, according to Game Informer’s platform and release-date listing.

Steel Wool describes the story as Gregory being trapped overnight in the Mega Pizzaplex, where Freddy helps him uncover its secrets and survive until dawn. The studio’s official game page gives the synopsis. What support did the game receive after launch?
Launch patches and bug fixes
On December 17, 2021, the day after release, Steel Wool acknowledged bugs, confusing mission guidance and interactions, crashes, and performance problems. McCaffrey described plans to address serious issues and said: “We are in it for the long haul when it comes to Security Breach. This game has a bright future ahead of it.” That was the studio’s stated intention at launch, not a guarantee of a current content schedule. Steel Wool’s post-launch update records the commitment.

The free Ruin story DLC
Steel Wool announced Ruin as free downloadable content in July 2023. The story follows Cassie as she searches the ruined Pizzaplex for Gregory. The studio pitched a darker, more claustrophobic setting and gameplay centered on patience and timing rather than the base game’s hide-and-seek approach. The announcement initially listed PS4, PS5 and PC, with Xbox and Switch versions to follow. See Steel Wool’s Ruin announcement for its release information.
Later technical updates
Technical support continued after Ruin. In August 2024, Steel Wool published patch notes for the PS4 and PS5 versions of both the base game and DLC, including troubleshooting for version 1.016. The instructions also cover installation for players with a physical disc. The update is documented in Steel Wool’s PS4 and PS5 patch notes.

Who took over FNAF after Cawthon?
The announcement named no successor, and the official records cited here do not identify who, if anyone, assumed the leadership role Cawthon described. That is different from saying no successor exists: the available sources simply do not establish the person’s identity or the details of any transition.
Steel Wool’s official announcements index lists FNAF projects and updates through June 2025, including release announcements and updates for Secret of the Mimic. This confirms that franchise activity continued after Cawthon’s retirement announcement. It does not, on its own, establish a new franchise leader or promise additional Security Breach content.

Is Security Breach still getting updates?
The record shows post-launch fixes, free story DLC and technical updates through August 2024. Steel Wool’s indexed FNAF news continues through June 2025, but those listings do not set out a specific future update plan for Security Breach. So the grounded answer is that the game received substantial post-release support, while a current long-term roadmap is not established by these announcements.
