Rob Farnham shared a family photograph of his father, singer John Farnham, on Christmas Day 2023. Contemporary coverage called it the first publicised picture of Farnham since his August 2022 oral cancer diagnosis—but that description belongs to 2023, not to the present. Later family updates in 2026 gave separate, more recent information about his health.
What the Christmas photo showed
On 25 December 2023, Rob Farnham posted a Christmas family photo on Instagram. PerthNow described John Farnham seated at the head of a festive table, with his wife, Jillian, standing beside him and embracing him. The image’s personal, family setting drew attention because it was shared after Farnham’s 2022 cancer diagnosis.
PerthNow’s report from 25 December 2023 called it the first publicised picture since the diagnosis. That is a description of the image’s significance at the time, not a claim that it was the first image ever taken or that it remains his latest photograph.
Why the picture attracted attention
In August 2022, Farnham announced an oral cancer diagnosis and underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his mouth, according to contemporary reporting. The 2023 photo was therefore discussed in the context of the diagnosis and the relative lack of publicised images afterward. A still photograph, however, cannot establish someone’s health or recovery.

What the family said about his health later
Subsequent updates are separate from the 2023 photo and should be read in date order. They offer different kinds of information rather than one continuous medical assessment.

September 2026: family statement about a tribute concert
On 20 September 2026, ABC News reported that the family said Farnham would miss a tribute concert because of poor health and required 24-hour medical care at home. The family said: “Unfortunately, he will not be able to attend and, as a family, we feel it is important to provide an update on John’s health to help explain why.” This later statement describes circumstances at that time and should not be merged with Rob’s earlier interview comment.
