Her account described alleged abuse and threats Nicole had confided in her, but contemporaneous reporting also recorded disputes over how close the two women were and over the book’s accuracy and propriety. Those claims must be distinguished from court findings: Simpson was acquitted of the murders in the criminal trial, and Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman remained the victims at the center of the case.
Who was Faye Resnick to Nicole Brown Simpson?
Resnick was a friend in Nicole Brown Simpson’s social circle, but the closeness of their friendship was disputed in contemporaneous coverage. Nicole’s father, Lou Brown, told the Los Angeles Times that Nicole had taken Resnick in for only a couple of weeks. Another friend described Resnick as having known Nicole for about a year. Those differing accounts are why it is more accurate to call Resnick a friend than to state without qualification that she was Nicole’s “best friend.” The Los Angeles Times reported the competing descriptions in October 1994.
Why was Faye Resnick controversial?
In October 1994, while jury selection was underway in the criminal case, Resnick and National Enquirer columnist Mike Walker published Nicole Brown Simpson: The Private Diary of a Life Interrupted. Despite the title, it was Resnick’s account of Nicole, not Nicole’s own diary. The memoir described private conversations Resnick said she had with Nicole, including allegations of abuse and threats by O.J. Simpson. Those are claims attributed to Resnick’s account, not independently verified quotations or findings by a court.
The timing and contents prompted concern. Judge Lance Ito paused jury selection to consider the book’s potential effect on prospective jurors and told them it “has caused the court deep concern about Mr. Simpson’s ability to get a fair trial,” according to the Los Angeles Times. Walker acknowledged that the book contained no “smoking gun” information about the murders. The newspaper also reported that the book’s account of an argument at a June 12, 1994, ballet recital was contradicted by comments from Nicole’s family. Contemporaneous coverage documented the jury-selection pause and immediate criticism.

Criticism also focused on the friendship itself and the book’s presentation of Nicole’s private life. Lou Brown criticized Resnick, including over her reported drug problem and the short period Nicole had taken her in; other people in Nicole’s circle offered different views of Resnick’s relationship with her. The disagreement matters: the memoir made Resnick a public interpreter of Nicole’s experiences, but it did not settle how close they were or independently establish the claims it recounted.
What did Resnick’s book say about O.J. Simpson?
As reported in the book and contemporaneous press coverage, Resnick said Nicole had confided in her about alleged abuse, threats, and a volatile relationship with Simpson. The Los Angeles Times also reported that Resnick believed Simpson was responsible for the murders. That belief was Resnick’s, not a court finding. The book’s co-author said it offered no “smoking gun” about the killings, and the criminal case’s verdict was not guilty.

When assessing any particular claim, keep four distinctions in view:
- Source: Was it Resnick’s memoir, a reported recollection, sworn testimony, or a court’s decision?
- Proximity: Did Resnick say she heard it directly from Nicole, or was it reported second-hand?
- Corroboration: Was the account independently supported, or did other people dispute it?
- Status: An allegation or a witness’s recollection is not itself a judicial finding.
Did Faye Resnick testify in the O.J. Simpson trial?
Resnick was subpoenaed by the defense in the criminal trial; prosecutors reportedly did not plan to call her, citing potential liabilities as a witness. In 1995, she told the Los Angeles Times, “I feel that testifying on the stand for Nicole needs to be done,” and said, “I hope very much I can make a difference.” These statements described her anticipated testimony and hopes, not a finding by the court. The newspaper reported on her expected role and the dispute over the defense’s approach.

The defense sought to use Resnick’s history of drug use and an alleged drug-dealer theory to suggest another possible motive for the killings. The Los Angeles Times reported that Resnick was in treatment at the time of the murders and that she rejected the idea that Nicole’s death was connected to her drug use. This was a defense strategy and a reported dispute, not proof of a motive. The Los Angeles Times covered the trial’s treatment of the theory.
What happened in the criminal and civil cases?
On October 3, 1995, the criminal jury acquitted Simpson of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. That is the precise outcome of the criminal case; Resnick’s allegations and beliefs should not be presented as proof of guilt. The Los Angeles Times reported the verdict.

Resnick later testified in the civil wrongful-death lawsuit. She completed questioning in February 1996, and the Washington Post reported that she testified about accounts Nicole had allegedly told her. Her testimony is evidence of what she said under oath; it should not be converted into a court finding that each underlying account was true. The Washington Post reported on her testimony in the civil proceedings.

In May 2024, the Associated Press reported that Resnick was among those interviewed for The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, a documentary in which Nicole’s sisters revisited her life and legacy. Her participation was one part of a broader effort to tell Nicole’s story beyond the criminal case. The Associated Press reported on the documentary and Resnick’s interview.
