Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi-language romance follows Archie, the confident daughter of an influential politician, and Parshya, a young man from a fisherman’s family. Their attraction crosses caste and class lines, and the film’s romantic pleasures become inseparable from the power arrayed against them.
A romance that earns its emotional stakes
Manjule begins with familiar pleasures: glances, letters, songs, a campus setting and friends who help the young couple find ways to meet. The early courtship has a playful, physical energy. In Nandini Ramnath’s 2016 review for Scroll.in, their first contact comes at a bathing well; later, a child carries messages between them. These modest details make the romance feel lived rather than abstract.
That tenderness matters when the story turns. Once Archie’s family discovers the relationship, the lovers face flight, doubt, suspicion and regret. The danger does not arrive as a separate lecture about social injustice: it grows from the circumstances surrounding their private happiness. The shift makes the film’s central contrast—young people drawn together while caste and family power pull them apart—especially affecting.
Archie and Parshya, played with naturalism
Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar were first-time performers in the lead roles. Ramnath praises their naturalistic work, especially Rajguru’s assurance as Archie. As the film darkens, she notes, Rajguru’s performance develops an added empathy. Thosar’s Parshya and the credible behavior of the supporting cast help ground the romance in its semi-rural setting.

The camera also contributes to the growing intimacy between the leads, while the regional texture of the setting gives their world specificity. These are strengths identified by Ramnath’s review, rather than a claim of universal critical consensus.
Caste, class and the film’s social argument
Archie is the daughter of an influential local Maratha politician; Parshya belongs to a fisherman’s family from the Pardhi community, as Ramnath describes them. Their difference is not just background information. It shapes the risks and choices that define the relationship, making the romance a way into the film’s critique of caste and gender discrimination.

In a March 2016 interview with Alaka Sahani for The Indian Express, Manjule said he wanted to make a “classic” love story and described the four-song film as more commercial in form than his earlier Fandry. He said the story had been written before Fandry, but he had not yet known how to tell it. Popular-romance conventions and music are not a retreat from the film’s social concerns; they give the love story its emotional form.
Manjule also described the film as personally informed rather than simply autobiographical. In a June 2016 Indian Express interview, he explained that ordinary experiences and feelings entered the work but were shaped through imagination. His stated takeaway is direct: “The takeaway from Sairat is that don’t kill anyone. Lovers shouldn’t be subjected to violence.”

Songs, landscape and scale
Ajay-Atul composed the music, and Manjule said the film contains four songs. He recalled that “Yad lagli” emerged during an early narration with the composers. The songs belong to the film’s romantic grammar, alongside the glances, messages and meetings that build the couple’s connection.
The film was shot around Karmala in Solapur. Manjule described a landscape that ranges from green areas near the Ujjani dam backwaters to arid terrain. That variation complements the story’s movement without reducing its social world to a single, generalized backdrop.

The runtime and the trade-off
Sairat asks for a substantial time commitment. Scroll’s 2016 review gives its runtime as 170 minutes; Rotten Tomatoes lists 2 hours 54 minutes on its current film page. The listings are close but not identical, so they should not be treated as the same exact figure. Ramnath argues that the film might have worked better with a trim. Its expansive courtship and deliberate emotional build are part of its appeal, but some viewers may feel the pace slacken.
Verdict
Sairat is most powerful when it lets romance and social reality occupy the same frame. Its warmth, humor and musical sweep make the lovers’ bond palpable; the family and caste structures around them give that bond real consequences. Rajguru’s assured performance, the naturalistic acting and the film’s rooted sense of place carry an ambitious story whose length is a genuine, if understandable, trade-off.
