What was Fernando Valenzuela’s cause of death?
CBS News, citing the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner and reporting on the death certificate, said septic shock was the immediate cause of Valenzuela’s death. The certificate also listed decompensated alcoholic cirrhosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis as underlying causes, and probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease as a significant contributing condition. The CBS/AP report and the Los Angeles Times report published these findings in November 2024.
These are distinct entries, not interchangeable descriptions. Septic shock was reported as the immediate cause; the two forms of cirrhosis were listed as underlying causes; and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was marked probable and recorded as a contributing condition. “Probable” matters: the certificate reporting does not establish that Valenzuela had a confirmed diagnosis.
What septic shock means
CBS describes septic shock as a life-threatening condition involving organ malfunction and dangerously low blood pressure. That general explanation does not establish the precise clinical sequence in Valenzuela’s case. The available reporting does not provide a more detailed medical account of his final illness.

When the cause of death became public
The Dodgers announced Valenzuela’s death on October 23, 2024, one day after he died, at age 63. The team’s announcement honored his career and legacy but did not give a cause. The certificate details appeared in news reports the following month.
Why Valenzuela became a Dodgers legend
Fernandomania began with an extraordinary 1981
Born in Etchohuaquila, Sonora, Mexico, Valenzuela made his Major League debut with the Dodgers on September 15, 1980. An injury to the scheduled Opening Day starter created an opportunity for him in 1981. He responded by shutting out Houston 2–0, then completed each of his first eight starts; five were shutouts, and his ERA over that opening stretch was 0.50, according to the Dodgers’ 2024 account.

He finished the 1981 regular season 13–7 with a 2.48 ERA and eight shutouts. He was the first player to win both the National League Rookie of the Year Award and the Cy Young Award in the same season. He also started the All-Star Game and recorded 11 complete games in 25 starts.
His postseason run added to the legend
Valenzuela went 3–1 with a 2.21 ERA in the 1981 postseason. The Dodgers’ account singles out his 146-pitch complete game in Game 3 of the World Series as the culmination of that run. Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully later described it this way: “This was not the best Fernando game. It was his finest.”

A career and connection that lasted well beyond 1981
Valenzuela played 17 big-league seasons, finishing with a 173–153 record and a 3.54 ERA, figures recounted by the Dodgers in 2024. He spent 11 seasons with Los Angeles, then played for the Angels, Orioles, Phillies, Padres and Cardinals. His 1990 no-hitter came against St. Louis.
His importance to the Dodgers extended beyond the mound. Fernandomania drew Mexican-American and Latino fans into a powerful connection with the team, and his influence remained visible after his playing days. He joined the Dodgers’ Spanish-language radio broadcast in 2003 and later moved to television, serving 22 seasons on the club’s Spanish-language broadcast team. The Dodgers retired his No. 34 on August 11, 2023.

Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said Valenzuela “galvanized the fan base with the Fernandomania season of 1981 and has remained close to our hearts ever since, not only as a player but also as a broadcaster.” Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrín put the cultural connection more simply: “He turned the game into a religion.”
