Eight discoveries reported in April 2025 did not establish that one serial killer was responsible. Police statements cited at the time said they had no information connecting several Connecticut cases; in New Haven, police said Denise Leary’s autopsy showed no signs of foul play. The count described a news snapshot, not a confirmed series of murders.
Is there a serial killer in New England?
The reports available in April 2025 did not establish that a serial killer was operating in New England. The phrase appeared in headlines and online discussions, but it was not an official investigative finding. A tally of people or remains discovered is not the same as a tally of homicides, and neither establishes that the cases share an offender.
Police departments’ statements were limited to the cases and information they addressed at that time. Saying investigators had no information linking cases is not proof that every death was explained, nor a definitive finding that every case was unrelated.
What police said about the Connecticut cases
New Haven: Denise Leary
On April 25, 2025, New Haven police said Leary’s autopsy showed no signs of foul play and that there was no indication of criminality in her disappearance or the location where her remains were found. Her cause of death had not been determined in that report. These statements describe what police reported then; they do not establish a final outcome for every investigation.

Groton and Killingly
In April 2025, police handling the New Haven, Groton, and Killingly cases said they had no information suggesting those cases were connected. Groton police had earlier said three sets of remains discovered in eastern Connecticut and western Rhode Island were not known to be connected. Those statements concern what investigators knew at the time, rather than a conclusive explanation of every discovery.
In Killingly, reporting described unidentified skeletal remains believed to be those of a man aged 25 to 45 who had been dead for about a year. State police reportedly said the death did not appear connected to other cases. The age and time-since-death estimates, as well as that investigative position, were reported assessments—not a final identification or outcome.

Why the serial-killer theory spread
Multiple discoveries in nearby communities, including places on opposite sides of state lines, drew attention and fueled online speculation. NBC Boston reported that Narragansett police responded to social-media posts alleging bodies might be buried near a Rhode Island beach. The report said authorities were not suggesting that the deaths at the center of the speculation were connected.
Proximity and timing can prompt questions, but they do not demonstrate a common cause or perpetrator. An unidentified person, a discovery site, and a confirmed homicide are distinct facts; a case cannot responsibly be described as part of a serial-murder pattern without evidence linking the deaths.

Why reports gave different totals
The number depends on when the report was published and what it counted. These figures refer to different reporting windows, not a single fixed official tally:
| Report | What it counted | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| CT Insider, April 2025 | Eight discoveries | Reported as occurring in recent weeks |
| CT Post, May 28, 2025 | 12 bodies or sets of remains | Reported over about three months |
The later total does not mean that the earlier count was a finding of eight linked victims. Any total should be tied to its publication date, time period, and description of what was counted.

What the cited reports leave unresolved
The reports do not provide a verified case-by-case roster for the exact eight discoveries in the April headline, or final outcomes for every investigation mentioned. They support a careful distinction: police said some cases were not known to be connected, and New Haven police reported no signs of foul play in Leary’s autopsy; they do not establish that every discovery had been conclusively explained or that a serial killer was responsible.
These statements reflect reports published in April and May 2025. They should not be read as a current status update from the departments in October 2026.
