Before the December 11 reveal, fans compared its demonic figures and tentacled yellow eye with several familiar franchises; those were theories, not confirmations.
Why fans started investigating the statue
Before The Game Awards 2025, Geoff Keighley and the show’s official account posted images of a striking statue along with a location clue. A nearby fan visited the site and shared closer images. Insider Gaming described demon-like figures and a large yellow eye surrounded by tentacles, while staff at the location offered no explanation of what the sculpture meant. Insider Gaming’s November 29, 2025 report captured the mystery while it was still unresolved.
The location was not described consistently. Insider Gaming placed the statue in a New Mexico desert, while later coverage by GameSpot said it was initially in the California desert and was subsequently moved to Los Angeles. Another account connected the clue to the Mojave Desert. These reports establish a desert installation and a later move, but they do not establish one independently verified exact site. GameSpot’s account of the reveal and Insider Gaming’s original report describe the differing location details.
What games did fans think it might be?
In the days after the images appeared, fans speculated that the statue might point to Saros, God of War, The Elder Scrolls, or Diablo 4. The imagery invited comparisons, but none of those theories was evidence of the statue’s actual connection. They should be understood as guesses made before the reveal, not as ongoing rumors.

A more specific clue surfaced shortly before the show. On December 9, 2025, reporting on trademark filings for a new Divinity logo and symbols noted that one symbol resembled the statue. That made Divinity a stronger possibility, but the filing was a clue—not official confirmation at the time. Gematsu reported the trademark filings.
The reveal: the Hellstone was for Larian’s new Divinity
At The Game Awards on December 11, 2025, the statue was identified as the Hellstone, part of the promotion for Larian’s new Divinity game. GameSpot reported that the Hellstone appeared at the end of the reveal trailer. VGC later reported that the new game is titled simply Divinity for now and described it as the sixth main game in the series. VGC’s report on the announcement provides that later context.

Why Larian built a real-world monument
Larian publishing director Michael Douse explained the physical stunt in post-reveal comments reported by GameSpot: “We’re all increasingly divorced from physicality, so we wanted to build a monument for not only our international teams to gather around, but for the rest of the gaming community to rally around.” In other words, the Hellstone was meant to give the announcement a shared physical focal point, not just serve as an image circulating online.
The reveal was also kept unusually secret. Larian CEO Swen Vincke told VGC, “The platforms didn’t know the game existed until The Game Awards,” referring to how closely the announcement was held before the show.
