Recorded remotely in May and originally planned around Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, the conversation ranged from Donald Trump to the films that shaped Reiner’s career.
What “final interview” means here
Brian Hiatt’s Rolling Stone feature was published on December 18, 2025. It reports that the remote interview took place in May, but does not establish a more precise chronology for the label “final.” The feature presents that description in the context of its publication; it should not be read as a claim about the timing of every interview Reiner may have given.
The planned subject was Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The discussion broadened into Reiner’s life and work, including his political comments and reflections on This Is Spinal Tap, Misery, and The Princess Bride.
What Reiner said about Trump
The feature includes Reiner’s comments on Donald Trump and Trump’s response to Bruce Springsteen. Reiner said, “First of all, Bruce Springsteen is a hundred percent right.” The statement belongs to that specific exchange about Springsteen, rather than serving as a general comment detached from the interview’s context.

Why This Is Spinal Tap mattered to him
Although the sequel was the interview’s intended focus, Reiner also reflected on This Is Spinal Tap and its lasting place in his work. He discussed how the satire is grounded by the friendship among the bandmates—a relationship that gives the comedy more than a succession of jokes about a fictional rock group.

How Reiner approached Misery’s ending
Reiner said he changed the ending of the film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel because he wanted its protagonist to emerge from the ordeal with his sense of self intact: “I wanted him to come out of the experience not diminished.” His explanation makes the adaptation choice about the character’s emotional outcome, not simply a change for surprise or shock.
The mix of genres in The Princess Bride
Reiner described The Princess Bride as a blend of satire, romance, and swashbuckling adventure. That combination is central to the film’s character: it plays with familiar storybook conventions while still delivering the romance and adventure those conventions promise.
