Lekh Tandon’s 1966 Hindi color film Amrapali brings together an ancient-world romance, Vyjayanthimala’s dance performance and Bhanu Athaiya’s striking costume design. Its story is a cinematic treatment of a legendary past, while its Ajanta-inspired clothes—especially a sari draped like a dhoti and paired with a bustier—give the film a vivid fashion identity.

What is the story of Amrapali?

The Government of India’s film catalogue places the story around 500 BC, in Vaishali, which it describes as the capital of the Licchavi republic. In the film, Amrapali is the city’s royal courtesan. The plot follows her connection with Ajatashatru, ruler of Magadha, amid conflict between Magadha and Vaishali and a devastating attack on the city. This is the film’s dramatic framing of an ancient setting and a legend-associated figure, not a definitive account of history.

The film stars Vyjayanthimala as Amrapali and Sunil Dutt as Ajatashatru. The Government of India catalogue lists a 120-minute duration; the Indiancine.ma archive gives a more precise runtime of 1:59:37. The archive also credits Lekh Tandon as director, Arjun Dev Rashk, Omkar Sahib and Balbir Singh as writers, F.C. Mehra as producer, Dwarka Divecha as cinematographer and Pran Mehra as editor. Indiancine.ma’s film entry summarizes the plot and credits, while the Government of India film catalogue provides the catalogue description.

How does dance shape the film?

Dance is central to the film’s screen identity because its lead performer, Vyjayanthimala, was known for dance as well as acting. The Government of India catalogue says Amrapali helped revitalize public interest in classical dance, and Scroll’s 2016 retrospective likewise highlights her performance. Together, these accounts point to dance as more than a decorative interlude: it is part of how the film presents Amrapali and draws viewers into its world.

Filmed on location, it re-creates the turbulent period when British colonial rule in India came crashing down. The memorable cast includes Dame Peggy Ashcr

The available accounts do not establish the dance form or choreography of individual sequences, so it is better to describe the film’s broader dance legacy than to assign specific styles to particular scenes. Scroll revisits the film’s dance and fashion in its 2016 retrospective.

Who designed the costumes, and what inspired them?

Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya researched the film’s look at Ajanta. The Government of India catalogue records her visit there for costume research, and the Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD) describes the costumes as inspired by the Ajanta cave frescoes. The result draws on historical and artistic references without making the film’s wardrobe a documentary reconstruction of ancient dress.

The best-known look is the “Amrapali sari,” which IIAD describes as a sari arranged in a dhoti-like drape and worn with a bustier. That combination joins a flowing, wrapped lower silhouette with a more fitted upper garment, making the costume distinctive on screen while supporting the film’s stylized visual world. IIAD also attributes the shade of the famous orange outfit to dye derived from parijat flowers; that detail is IIAD’s account, rather than independently confirmed production documentation. IIAD’s account of Indian costume designers discusses Athaiya’s inspirations and the signature look.

Why did the costumes outlast the film’s release?

The costumes connect three things that are often treated separately: a visual reference to Ajanta, clothing designed for a screen performance, and a silhouette memorable enough to be recalled beyond the film. Athaiya’s use of fresco-inspired ideas gives the wardrobe a historical point of departure; the dhoti-like drape and bustier turn that reference into a deliberately cinematic shape. The look’s later circulation is part of its legacy, not proof that the film reproduced ancient clothing exactly.

Scroll describes Amrapali as a landmark of history, dance and high fashion. Hindustan Times coverage reports that the Ajanta-inspired costumes became popular and were recreated for other characters and films. Those accounts support a fashion afterlife, though they do not quantify its reach. Hindustan Times’ coverage of Athaiya places the film’s costume work within her broader career.

How was Amrapali received?

Scroll’s 2016 retrospective describes the film as a commercial failure, even as it emphasizes its dance and fashion significance. The source does not provide an attributable box-office total, so the commercial verdict should not be converted into a revenue figure or ranking.
