Jolly LLB 2 is a Hindi courtroom comedy-drama whose sharpest asset is Saurabh Shukla as Judge Sunderlal Tripathi. Its satire and social concerns have appeal, but contemporary reviewers found that the later courtroom drama leans too heavily on contrivance and melodrama. The result is a mixed verdict: a lively, worthwhile performance inside a film that pushes its case too far.
What is Jolly LLB 2 about?
Directed by Subhash Kapoor, the 2017 sequel follows Jagdishwar Mishra, or Jolly (Akshay Kumar), a junior lawyer in Lucknow who becomes involved in Hina Siddiqui’s effort to seek justice for her deceased husband. Huma Qureshi and Annu Kapoor also appear. The Times of India lists the film’s release date as February 10, 2017, and its runtime as 2 hours 17 minutes: Times of India film listing and review.
Why does the courtroom drama feel like overreach?
The film’s heightened tone is part of its commercial-comedy design; the problem, as several contemporary critics saw it, is that the escalation eventually overwhelms the satire. Hindustan Times reviewer Sarit Ray found the setup effective but the second half’s courtroom scenes implausible, melodramatic, and lacking in logic. That contrast matters: punchlines and an accessible hero can bring viewers into the story, but a courtroom resolution built on dramatic convenience weakens the credibility of the critique.
Ray described the film’s commercial register as a deliberate choice: “He’s making a commercial film, one that will reach wider audiences — therefore Akshay Kumar as Jagdishwar Mishra, aka Jolly, a maverick junior lawyer; and a script full of punchlines for him to mouth, succinct and catchy so that people can go home and repeat them.” Hindustan Times review.

Why is Saurabh Shukla the standout?
As Judge Sunderlal Tripathi, Shukla supplies the film with a distinct comic center. His deadpan delivery and finely judged dialogue give the courtroom scenes energy, even when the surrounding plotting strains plausibility. The Indian Express reviewer Shubhra Gupta said the film would be lesser without him, while India Today’s Ananya Bhattacharya singled him out as a scene-stealer, praising the comic detail in his performance.
That praise is more than a consolation prize. Tripathi’s presence helps preserve the film’s satirical character and gives its legal proceedings a memorable personality. Shukla’s performance is the clearest reason to watch, even for viewers who find the final stretch excessive.

The reviews converge on the performance and the late-film excess, but not on the film’s overall value. The Indian Express gives more weight to the social themes and watchability; Hindustan Times stresses the gap between a promising satire and an unconvincing courtroom resolution. For Gupta, the film’s plot and social concerns remain valuable despite its contrivances and preachier ending. Ray’s criticism points to the opposite pressure: when the courtroom scenes stop feeling plausible, the satire loses some of its force. The difference is not whether the film has a point, but whether its dramatic machinery earns the way it delivers that point. Viewers willing to accept broad commercial storytelling may find the message and cast persuasive; those wanting restrained courtroom logic are more likely to be frustrated by the finale.
