The “colossal missed opportunity” in the Godzilla Stratocaster story is a joke about its output jack—not a feature Fender forgot. The one-off Masterbuilt guitar has a side-mounted jack to keep its Godzilla artwork clear; New Atlas’s tongue-in-cheek alternative was to Photoshop the jack onto the front, where the artist said it would look as if it came out of Godzilla’s crotch.
Why didn’t Fender put the jack on the front?
The side-mounted output jack was a deliberate design choice on Fender’s one-off Masterbuilt Godzilla Stratocaster. Master Builder Andy Hicks told New Atlas that the team chose a side jack rather than one on the guitar’s face. Collaborating artist Tom Neely explained the practical and visual concern: “If we’d put it on the front, the jack would come out of here, which wouldn’t have been a good look.”
New Atlas then made the “missed opportunity” gag by photoshopping a jack onto the guitar’s face. The joke is about where the jack sits; Fender did not leave out a required connection.
What is the Fender Godzilla Stratocaster?
Fender’s 2025 Japan collaboration comprised three distinct guitars: a one-off Limited Edition Masterbuilt Stratocaster and two Made in Japan limited models, Blue and Black. The collection marked the 70th anniversaries of the 1954 Godzilla film and the Fender Stratocaster. The guitars debuted publicly at Fender Experience 2025 in Tokyo, held October 11–13; the anniversary year was 2024, but the collection’s public debut was in 2025. Godzilla.com covered the collaboration.

The one-off Masterbuilt
Hicks built the Masterbuilt guitar with Los Angeles artist Neely. Its design has no pickguard, a narrow-spaced hardtail bridge that leaves room for artwork on the back, and a side-mounted jack. It also has a button-triggered sound chip that plays Godzilla’s roar through an amplifier and artwork that glows under black light. New Atlas reports that Toho supplied the roar audio. These features belong to the one-off Masterbuilt, not the two Made in Japan models.
The Made in Japan Blue and Black
The Blue and Black are separate production models. Fender’s Japan announcement describes their shared core features as an alder body with a myrtlewood top, a custom Godzilla humbucker, and an onboard distortion circuit activated by pushing Tone 2. Their pickguard artwork uses Fender’s “G.L.O. – Gain-Linked Optics”: the Godzilla dorsal-fin design lights more strongly as distortion increases.

Fender Australia’s Blue model product page specifies a Modern C neck, 22 medium-jumbo frets, and a rosewood fingerboard. Fender’s official release says the Black shares the Blue’s core specifications and adds a serial-numbered special neck plate. The Masterbuilt’s roar button is not a feature of these production models.
Does the Godzilla Strat have built-in distortion?
Yes—the Made in Japan Blue and Black have an onboard distortion circuit activated by pushing Tone 2. Their gain-linked lighting responds to the distortion level. This is separate from Fender’s Godzilla Distortion pedal, an additional product in the collaboration; the pedal is not the guitar circuit in a separate enclosure, nor is it the Masterbuilt’s roar sound chip.
