Spoilers for Fear Street Part 1: 1994. The Skull Mask killer is Ryan Torres, Heather’s boyfriend, who was killed in the Shadyside mall massacre and later appears as an attacker. That reveal identifies the masked threat in the film; it does not explain the full supernatural force behind Shadyside’s murders.
Who is the Skull Mask killer?
Ryan Torres is the person behind the Skull Mask. The film first presents him as Heather’s boyfriend and one of the victims of the 1994 mall massacre, then shows him returning as a masked attacker. The Ryan identification is also reported in an IMDb plot-summary result, though the page itself was not independently accessible; the available support for that specific name is therefore limited.

How does Ryan connect to Shadyside’s other killers?
Ryan’s return is part of a wider pattern: Shadyside has been plagued by brutal murders linked to an ancient evil. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the town as haunted by violence for more than 300 years and says the teenage friends encounter the force responsible for the killings. The film points toward Sarah Fier and her curse as the larger threat, rather than treating Ryan as the complete explanation.
The movie also refers to earlier Shadyside killers. In a contemporaneous spoiler explainer, the Los Angeles Times notes Josh’s reference to Cyrus Miller as the first recorded killer in 1666. That historical detail places Ryan within a much longer trail of violence, but it does not by itself explain how the curse works or why Ryan returns.

What does Part 1 leave unanswered?
Fear Street Part 1: 1994 deliberately leaves the mythology incomplete. It does not fully establish Sarah Fier’s history or explain every mechanism behind the curse. The Los Angeles Times identified several questions left open after the first film, including the significance of Fier’s severed hand, why the curse is focused on Shadyside, the sheriff’s suspicious note, and C. Berman’s history. Those are unresolved mysteries at the end of Part 1, not answers to Ryan’s identity.

The trilogy moves from 1994 to 1978 and then 1666, with each installment adding context to Shadyside’s history. Netflix announced in 2021 that the films would debut a week apart, beginning July 2. Part 1’s reveal is therefore best read in two layers: Ryan is the immediate masked attacker, while the deeper cause belongs to the trilogy’s unfolding Sarah Fier mythology.

The films draw on R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series, but writer-director Leigh Janiak said the trilogy is not a direct adaptation of any one book and creates its own mythology. The movies use the series’ Shadyside setting and recurring-town premise while telling a connected story of their own.
