Perth fashion designer Ruth Tarvydas was found dead at her East Perth home in May 2014, according to contemporaneous news reports. The West Australian reported her death was not being treated as suspicious; PerthNow said police would prepare a report for the coroner. Those reports do not state a cause of death or a later coronial finding.
What happened to Ruth Tarvydas?
PerthNow reported on 16 May 2014 that Tarvydas was found dead on the street outside her East Perth apartment at about 8 a.m. the previous day. The West Australian, also reporting on 16 May, said she was found at her East Perth apartment. The accounts differ in both location wording and date phrasing, so they should not be collapsed into a single more precise account.
The West Australian said the death was not being treated as suspicious. PerthNow reported police would prepare a report for the coroner. The contemporaneous reports cited here do not give a cause of death or a subsequent coronial conclusion.
Who was Ruth Tarvydas?
Tarvydas was a Perth fashion designer known for glamorous evening gowns. PerthNow reported that she was born in Lithuania and came to Fremantle as a two-year-old with her family, who were fleeing post-war Germany. The outlet also said she opened a Perth boutique in the 1960s.

The red gown worn by Rebecca Twigley
One of Tarvydas’s best-known designs was a red, backless gown worn by Rebecca Twigley at the 2004 Brownlow Medal. Both PerthNow and The West Australian highlighted the dress when reporting Tarvydas’s death.
Her business and fashion legacy
The West Australian reported that Tarvydas’s King Street store closed in October 2012 amid business debts, and that a Claremont store opened that December with businessman John Bond’s support. The West Australian cited $1 million in debts; PerthNow later reported almost $1 million owed to ANZ, attributing that figure to a December report by The Sunday Times. These are figures reported in news coverage, not independently audited accounts, and they do not establish a connection between financial difficulties and her death.

In an earlier interview quoted by The West Australian in 2014, Tarvydas said, “You have to go through everything in life to grow,” and described a changed approach to her work: “It is about presenting fashion with a whole different energy.”
After her death, family and people in the Western Australian fashion community paid tribute to her creativity and influence. PerthNow’s family-tribute report, published on 18 May 2014, described her as 66; its initial report had described her as being in her late 60s. The family tribute also reported that a commemorative runway show was planned for the Perth Fashion Festival.
