During filming of the 2014 movie, Gillan said the makeup process took about four and a half hours, down from about five hours at first.
What changed Karen Gillan’s appearance?
The contrast came from several elements working together. Gillan’s shaved head let the design sit close to her skull; prosthetic pieces altered the visible contours of her head and face; and paint supplied Nebula’s blue finish. Makeup designer David White said the team wanted the look to be slick, angular and streamlined, with a vivid blue color. CineMovie’s August 4, 2014 interview with White describes the design rationale.
Gillan explained the head pieces in a SlashFilm on-set interview published July 11, 2014: “So there’s one piece up front, and then this is a piece – none of this is my skin!” She also said the pieces were painted. The finished character therefore did not simply rely on blue makeup over Gillan’s natural features.
Why was her head shaved?
White said the production shaved Gillan’s head to get as close to her skull as possible and achieve Nebula’s slick silhouette. The shave was part of the design, rather than a stand-alone explanation for the transformation: it worked alongside the prosthetics and paint to create a clean, streamlined shape.

How long did the makeup take?
In the 2014 on-set interview, Gillan said the process “takes about four and a half hours now” and recalled that it had initially taken about five hours. Those are her production-era estimates for getting into the look at that point in filming, not a published standard for every Nebula appearance.
White’s interview says Gillan wore seven prosthetic pieces and describes Nebula as one of the more difficult looks for applying prosthetics. The piece count is specific to Gillan’s character, unlike the larger production totals.

How large was the film’s makeup operation?
TIME’s July 31, 2014 report put the film-wide total at approximately 1,250 prosthetics applied over filming by a team of 50 makeup artists. Those figures cover the principal cast and alien extras across the production; they are not a count of pieces used on Nebula.

The makeup and shaved head make clear why Gillan could look markedly different from her natural appearance. But the available production interviews and reporting do not establish how many fans failed to recognize her or measure audience reaction. “Fans had a hard time recognizing” is best understood as the title’s framing of the visual contrast, not a quantified finding.
